Beachwood High School is a four-year college preparatory public high school located in Beachwood, Ohio, an eastside suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. It is part of the Beachwood City School District.

Beachwood has earned three U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Awards, the highest rating of Excellent from the State of Ohio Department of Education, membership in the elite Ohio Department of Education "Schools to Watch," a National 21st Century School of Distinction Award for Technology Excellence, induction in the Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators Hall of Fame, two Excellence in School Management Awards from the Harvard Business School Club, and national recognition as among the Top 100 in Music Education from the American Music Conference.[3]

Beachwood High School is guided by its mission statement "To develop intellectual entrepreneurs with a social conscience." These chosen eight words mean the District is centered on the development of creative, knowledge-seeking members of the community who will take risks and see the big picture; young men and women who will become the responsible global leaders of tomorrow.[4]

Curriculum

Beachwood High School offers an extensive college-preparatory curriculum. Advanced Placement courses (14) are offered in these areas: Biology, Chemistry, Physics B, Physics C, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics, U.S. Government, Comparative Government, U.S. History, Modern European History, English, Chinese, and Spanish. Honors classes (21) include: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, CPE (Chemistry, Physics, and Earth/Space) Science, Robotics, Environmental Science, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Studio Art, English (9, 10, and 11), Spanish (4 and 5), Hebrew (4, 5, and 6), Chinese (4), and American Sign Language (4). Students also may take college courses at local colleges and universities for high school and college credit through the District’s Post-Secondary Enrollment Option.[5]

Faculty

Faculty is 100 percent licensed with an average 11 years experience; 81 percent hold Master’s or Doctoral degrees. Eight teachers have National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Licensure; one received Library of Congress Honorary Fellow appointments.[6]

Specialty Programming

Specialty programming includes an Asian Studies curriculum focusing on the language, literary, social and political culture of Japan and China, with an optional annual trip to Japan organized by the Council on International Educational Exchange. Opportunities for students interested in engineering exist through courses such as Engineering Drawing and Honors Physics/Robotics. Electives such as Living Law, Human Rights and Conflict, and Cleveland Economics are available in the area of social studies. Other semester electives such as Art of the Motion Picture, Improvisational Comedy, TV Production, and Physical Education courses in Weight Training, Aquatics, Team Sports and Lifetime Activities also are offered. An eight-week study program in Israel is sponsored by the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland. Students also may study abroad through the American Field Service Program.[7]

Senior Search

Senior Search is an independent study project that allows seniors to work directly with outside advisors during the spring semester to explore careers of their choice.[8]

The Information Resource Center at Beachwood High School

The Beachwood High School Information Resource Center, honored for excellence by Ohio Leadership for School Libraries and INFOhio, the information network for Ohio schools, offers an extensive collection of print and electronic resources. The collection includes more than 15,000 print volumes, 1,000 electronic volumes, print subscriptions to more than 100 magazines and newspapers, and electronic subscriptions to more than 100 databases containing 6,500 full-text periodicals. Access to more than 19 million print volumes and thousands of audiovisuals is available through inter-library loan. State-of- the-art technology allows for student-produced video and digital presentations as well as distance learning opportunities. A 24-hour online reference service is available to students for homework and research support.[9]

The Beachcomber

The BHS newspaper, The Beachcomber, is an award-winning publication that realizes much success in the Ohio Scholastic Media Association.[10]

Speech and Debate

The BHS Speech and Debate Team has obtained much success in a short amount of time. Numerous competitors place weekly at local level tournaments and by doing so, have qualified and competed at state and national levels.

Athletics

The men's and women's track teams have realized much success over the past several years. The women's team won the indoor state championships and had many strong individual performances at the outdoor state championships. The men's team also has many competitive athletes.
