Jason Grace is a fictional character and one of the three protagonists in Rick Riordan's The Heroes of Olympus book series, the sequel to the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. He first appears in The Lost Hero, the first novel of the series, as a fifteen or sixteen year-old boy suffering from amnesia. He meets Piper McLean, who claims to be his girlfriend, and Leo Valdez, who claims to be his best friend, on a school bus ride to the Grand Canyon. Jason and his two friends learn that they are demigods, half-human and half-god, after getting attacked by a group of storm spirits. They are escorted to Camp Half-Blood, a sanctuary for Greek demigods. After conducting lightning through his weapon, he realizes that he is the son of Jupiter, the Roman form of Zeus, the king of the gods.

Background

Jason is the demigod son of Jupiter (Zeus) and Ms. Grace, an infamous television actress. He was born seven years after Thalia Grace, who was conceived while Jupiter was in his Greek form, Zeus. Hera, Zeus' wife, was furious with Jason's birth. To placate her anger, Zeus decided to give her Jason's life as a gift, also naming him after the Greek tragic hero Jason, who was Hera's favorite mortal. When Jason was two, he was taken away by Hera and was brought to Lupa, the trainer of Roman demigods. At camp, he was trained in discipline and conquest. Jason described the Roman camp's training to be "more warlike" than Camp Half-Blood. After defeating the Titan Krios at the Battle of Mount Othrys, Jason's memories were wiped away by Hera and was sent to the Wilderness School to meet up with Piper and Leo, the Greek demigod children of Aphrodite and Hephaestus respectively.

Jason begins to slowly piece together his lost memories throughout the series. He discovers that he could speak fluent Latin and uses Roman terms instead of Greek terms. He begins to remember his sister Thalia after seeing a picture of her at Camp Half-Blood. While he is fighting Porphyrion, he tells the giant that he is "a child of Rome, consul to demigods, praetor of the First Legion" and shows the giant his tattoo, which causes the giant to look uneasy. At the end of The Lost Hero, he remembers that he was the commander at the Battle of Mount Othrys and defeated Krios during the Second Titan War with many other Roman demigods. He tells to the campers that Hera sent him to Camp Half-Blood to make peace with the Greek demigods, and that Percy Jackson is to do the same at the Roman camp.

In the books

The Lost Hero

Jason makes his first appearance in The Lost Hero as an 15 or 16 year old who wakes up in a school bus belonging to the Wilderness School, a high school for delinquent students. He finds himself holding hands with a girl named Piper, who claims to be his girlfriend, and sitting behind Leo, who claims to be his best friend. Jason discovers that he has no memory of who they are, how he ended up in the school, or who he is. Jason's supposed gym teacher, Coach Hedge tells Jason that he has never seen him before today, and that he is good at manipulating the Mist to make everyone believe that they know him. The coach also reveals that he, Piper, and Leo are demigods, and that an extraction team is coming to bring Piper and Leo to camp along with an unknown "special package".

Jason, Piper, and Leo are brought to Camp Half-Blood by senior camper Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena, and Butch, son of Iris. Despite suffering memory loss, Jason consistently feels uncomfortable at camp, feeling that he does not belong to this camp. Jason instinctively summons a thunder bolt using his weapon, and remembers that he is the son of Jupiter. Jason does not understand Ancient Greek but Latin, contrary to all of the campers at Camp Half-Blood. Jason embarks on a quest with Piper and Leo to save Hera from the giant Porphyrion after Rachel Elizabeth Dare, the camp's current Oracle of Delphi, gives Jason a prophecy. Jason encounters Medea, Cyclopes, The Winds, and giants on his quest. He also finds his sister Thalia. When he returns to camp, he says he is from the Roman Camp Half-Blood, and Percy is most like there.

Characterization

Appearence

Throughout the series, Jason is described to be extremely handsome, with tidily cropped blonde hair, bright blue eyes, and a friendly scar on the corner of his lip from trying to eat a stapler when he was two years-old. He is of average height with athletic built, having muscular and tanned arms. He has an intimidating tattoo etched deeply under his forearm: twelve straight lines like a bar code with an eagle (the animal of Zeus/Jupiter) and the letters "SPQR" over the lines. Though Jason doesn't remember where he got the marks, he believes that they were burnt onto his skin.

Personality

Jason is polite, dedicated, and serious with a moderate sense of humor. He is naturally heroic and is always driven to protect his friends, even if it costs his own life. While he harbors feelings for Piper, Jason feels that he may be romantically involved with someone else in the past, though he can't remember who.

Atmospheric abilities

Like all demigods, Jason is diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. Despite suffering memory loss in the beginning of the series, Jason is an extremely experienced fighter. He is well-trained in close combat and is able to wield a sword and lance with perfect ease. He is able to hold off on his own against larger, stronger, and more experienced exponents. As the son of Jupiter, the god of thunder and sky, Jason is able to manipulate and control the winds, enabling him to fly. He is immune to lightning strikes; he is able to conduct electricity through his body and summon thunder bolts through his weapons, though summoning too much energy can cause Jason to pass out. Contrary to all of the demigods introduced in the series, Jason is able to speak and understand Latin rather than Ancient Greek. He tends to call all Greek gods and spirits by their Roman names rather than their Greek names.

Possessions

Jason used to wield a coin that could change into a double-edged sword, javelin, or a lance, depending on how the coin was flipped. One side of the drachma had an image of an axe engraved with the words "Ivlivs", which is Latin for "Julius." The other side of the drachma had a portrait of Julius Caeser, who was the dictator of Rome. This drachma coin, however, was destroyed while Jason was fighting the giant Enceladus. After he and his friends saves the imprisoned Hera from Porphyrion, the goddess gives Jason a gladius for the loss of his drachma weapon.
