Blue is an unusual colour for hair, [1] except for aging ladies who may have a blue rinse to conceal their gray hair.

The hair of workers who regularly come into close contact with cobalt or indigo may become blue.[2]

In Homer, characters are said to have dark blue (kyaneos) hair or eyebrows when they are angry or in an emotionally intense state.[3] For example, Odysseus' beard became blue when he was transformed by Athena upon returning home to confront his wife's suitors.[4] This imagery may stem from Egyptian myth, in which their gods were said to have hair of lapis lazuli.[5]

Some comic book or animated characters are shown with blue hair, including Superman and Marge Simpson.[6]
