Hyland Software Inc. is the developer of the enterprise content management (ECM) software suite called OnBase. Hyland Software is headquartered[1] in Westlake, Ohio and also has other offices in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; Lincoln, Nebraska; Irvine, California; São Paulo, Brazil; London, England; Tokyo, Japan; Salem, New Hampshire and most recently, Reading, Massachusetts. The company currently has more than 1,000 employees and 9,500 customers.

Corporate History

Founding

Hyland Software was established in 1991 by Packy Hyland Jr. He met with members of the Necedah Bank to discuss their data processing and how electronic information technology could reduce printing costs by storing daily reports directly to optical disk. Packy Hyland created the first version of OnBase for the Necedah Bank, which became Hyland Software's first customer. Since OnBase was originally created for a bank, a majority of Hyland Software's customers were in the banking industry until recently when the healthcare and government fields became key industries[2].

Milestones

Product

Hyland Software's OnBase product integrates document management, business process automation and records management. It is a single suite of enterprise content management (ECM) applications that uses the same user interface and content repository but is configured to meet specific needs of individuals within an organization. Industry analysts such as Forrester Research focus on the product's imaging and archiving capabilities as its strengths[11]. OnBase provides several of the traditional ECM capabilities including capture, routing, managing, sharing and archiving. This ECM functionality is complemented with specific industry solutions and back office operations.

The OnBase product also offers integrations - without expensive custom coding - with other software offerings. This is a result of different industries using software specific to their needs, such as Epic Systems in the healthcare field. Other integrations include Microsoft[12], SAP, Oracle Corporation[13] and Lawson[14].

Services

OnBase OnLine

This service is a Web version of Hyland Software's traditional OnBase product offering. Applications are hosted at a data center and accessed over a secure Internet connection. OnBase OnLine is operated, supported and maintained by Hyland Software and is offered in two ways. The first follows the Software as a Service model, in which OnBase OnLine is paid for on a monthly basis, including selected products and the hosting service. The other offering provides that the organization owns one or more perpetual software licenses while still outsourcing the use and maintenance of the network and servers.

OnBase Disaster Recovery Services

These services support business continuity planning.

OnBase Data Validation Services

Services include backup/restore, database and disk group validation of the OnBase system. Media for backup is sent to Hyland Software's corporate headquarters for validation on either a monthly or quarterly basis.

OnBase Hosted Disaster Recovery Service

Provides customers with access to a hosted OnBase system in the event of a disaster. Synchronization occurs between the customer's on-premise solution and the OnBase OnLine hosting site up to once a minute.
