The sixteenth series of BBC motoring series Top Gear began airing on December 21, 2010, with the usual team of Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond, with the addition of Tiff Needell as the 'Emergency Stig'. The main body of the series will be broadcast from January 23, 2011, with a preview of the series airing at the beginning of the December 21st episode.[1]

In the opening episode, billed as the first part of the Top Gear Christmas Double, the team took part in a road-trip across the east coast of the United States, attempting to locate America's best driving road and visit the home of Nascar, before competing in a head-to-head race to see which of them could reach a TV studio in the south of New York first. The team filmed at various locations in the United States, including the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, and the Virginia International Raceway just outside of Danville, Virginia, while testing the Ferrari 458 Italia, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, and Porsche 997 GT3 RS. The episode also included a review of this year's must-have christmas gifts, Clarkson putting out a fire with a can of Pussy, and Danny Boyle starring as the star in a reasonably priced car.

The second half of the Top Gear Christmas Double, which also acts as the second episode of the series, aired on December 26, 2010, and features the trio completing a 1,200 mile journey through the Middle East, visiting areas such as Israel and Iraq.[2]

While filming the opening episode, the team also visited Los Angeles to film a segment for the fourth episode of the series. Richard Hammond was also spotted testing out a new Bowler in Dubai during October 2010, a preview of which appeared in the opening episode. A segment featuring Jeremy Clarkson, driving the latest Jaguar XFR from the most westerly point at sunset to the most easterly point (Ness Point, Lowestoft) at sunrise, is expected to be carried over from the last series.
