Double Rainbow refers to a viral video posted by Paul “Bear” Vasquez. The clip, filmed in his front yard just outside Yosemite National Park, chronicles his sighting of and reaction to a double rainbow. As of December 30, 2010, the video had over 22,000,000 views[1].

History

Paul Vasquez posted the video to YouTube himself (as user Hungrybear9562) on January 8, 2010. On July 3rd, comedian and late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel linked to the video in a post on Twitter[2], saying that he and a friend had declared it the "funniest video in the world." The video quickly gained over one million views.[3]

A July 16th feature on the video by CNN.com stated that the video had gained 4.8 million views.[4]

Numerous YouTube users created fan videos using clips of Vasquez's voice from the Double Rainbow video, making it an internet meme.

On July 5, 2010, the Gregory Brothers auto-tuned the video under the name "Double Rainbow Song". Their video has since gotten 16,185,513 views and has become a viral video just like the original.[5] The song has been covered by the likes of Amanda Palmer and Jimmy Fallon (as Neil Young).[6]

The video itself was parodied in a scene from an episode of the Cartoon Network original series Adventure Time, as well as in Bill Amend's comic strip FoxTrot.[7]

In September 2010, Microsoft teamed up with Vasquez for a commercial advertising the panorama stitch feature in Windows Live Photo Gallery to capture a double rainbow in a picture.[8]

The video game Super Meat Boy references the meme in the achievement "The Commander", awarded when unlocking the Commander Video character. The achievement text reads "You unlocked Commander Video! Double rainbow all da way!"[9][non-primary source needed]

In the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops, the multiplayer map "Nuketown" features a double rainbow in the sky.
