Pete Gilbert

Pete Gilbert ([born 1 March 1948) is a British artist, painter and graphic designer. Gilbert has become well known for his moving non-representational, contemporary abstract art.

Painting

Pete Gilbert is best known for his abstract paintings. He works mainly in oils on both landscapes and abstract compositions, sometimes using gold or silver leaf. Pete's view is that the disparate styles of his paintings reflect who and where he is. The New Forest, Pete's home, is a major inspiration: 'I would be a fool not to use the ever changing colours that the seasons bring. Sunlight through the trees, early morning mists across the river, a bluebell wood right on my doorstep, how could I NOT paint this'.

Whilst Pete's landscapes have an abstract quality his abstracts definately so, reflecting some quintessential vignent of reality, 'picking up on the deepest cello rhythm in a Brahms symphony, or a drum beat on an Afro Jazz recording that I heard only once, I can be inspired to paint from a word, a mood, music, or movement half seen in the shadows'.

Establishing a prefered style has taken many years, 'but now I‘m now quite comfortable, moving backward and forwards from post impressionist landscapes of the New Forest to the highly charged and emotional abstracts that try to capture that moment, that mood'.

The variety and contrast of style in Pete's work is surprising; exhibiting his work he is often been asked 'who is the other artist?', something Pete sometimes wonders himself!

Pete's work is still developing, 'my work is still developing and its never about what I see, its about what others see in it'.
