Ken Ring (writer)
Ken Ring is an author, astrologer and public figure from Auckland, New Zealand who publishes yearly almanacs[1] for NZ, Australia and Ireland in which he claims to be able to predict the weather for the entire year.
Almanac
Ken claims to use astrology combined with old weather data to predict the weather 2 years in advance [2] (each almanac must be prepared 2 years before so that it can be printed). Ken claims that the weather is solely influenced by the moon and that because the moon has an 18 year cycle the weather will be exactly the same every 18 years. [3]
Christchurch earthquake controversy
In October of 2010, Ken Ring claimed to have predicted the Christchurch 7.1 magnitude earthquake of the previous month[4]. He also claimed in March 2011 to have predicted the devastating 6.3 magnitude aftershock in Feburary. [5]
Ken Ring was interviewed by John Campbell on Campbell Live [6] after which John Campbell was criticised for his interview technique. He was accused of being dismissive, angry, and not giving Ken a fair chance to speak. [7]
Ken has also predicted that another earthquake will occur on March 20th [8]
Global warming denier
Ken Ring is also a denier of anthropomorphic global warming. [9]
Criticism
Ken Ring has been widely criticised and debunked by many skeptics and scientists.[10] His almanac and website predictions have been statisticlly tested against actual weather data and all results have so far been negative. [11]
No scientists accept Ken Ring's claims or methods. [12]
Scientific knowledge
Ken Ring has frequently demonstrated a lack of basic scientific knowledge and research skills. [13]
Online persona
Ken Ring comes across on the radio and on TV as affible and somewhat avuncular, but when asked difficult questions online he often becomes rude and vitriolic. Instead of engaging in honest debate, Ken frequently resorts to threats of legal action and Godwin's Law.[14] [15]
