Blue is the second album by Third Eye Blind, written and recorded in 1999 and released on November 23, 1999. It is a moodier, darker album than the band's first, though the second single was the radio-friendly "Never Let You Go". The album debuted at #40 on the Billboard 200, selling about 75,000 copies in its first week of release.[2] Blue has been certified platinum by the RIAA, selling about 1.25 million copies in the U.S.[2][3]

During the band's tour shortly after the release of Blue, Kevin Cadogan was released from the band on January 25, 2000.[4] Tony Fredianelli, who had some limited experience with the band previously, joined the band shortly thereafter.[5] Cadogan subsequently sued Third Eye Blind for breach of contract, with a settlement of an undisclosed amount permanently ending the relationship.[6]

According to former guitarist Kevin Cadogan, the original album title was to be Castling, but was changed at the last minute.[citation needed] Blue was drummer Brad Hargreave's concoction.[citation needed]

  • "Slow Motion" was originally released with only the chorus, due to concerns about its lyrical content. Soon thereafter, Elektra Records re-released Blue with an instrumental version. However, the full version of the song was released everywhere outside of the States and found its way around the Internet, and people began to request the song at every show. In the summer of 2006, Rhino Records released the compilation A Collection, which features the full version of the song, with all lyrics included.
  • After the fadeout of "Darwin," there is about twelve minutes of silence, and then a hidden track, an extended coda of "The Red Summer Sun."
