Husson University, formerly Husson College, is a private university located in Bangor, Maine, USA offering undergraduate and graduate degrees. Enrollment for the 2009-2010 academic year was over 3,000 students, with approximately 600 of those in graduate programs.


History

The university named after its founder Chesley Husson. Founded in 1898, Husson was originally named Shaw School of Business and was located on the second floor of a building in downtown Bangor. Enrollment was low until after World War II, when its reputation grew as a business school.

Today the University has two colleges, and three independent schools: The College of Business, The College of Health and Education, The School of Pharmacy, The School of Graduate Studies, and the School of Science and Humanities.

Husson College was renamed Husson University on October 11, 2008.

Accreditation

Husson is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc. (NEASC), The International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE), the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE), and is approved by the Maine State Board of Education. The M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is approved by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC).

The School of Pharmacy has received Pre-candidacy Status through the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. State of Maine Department of Education, American Association of Intensive English Programs, and the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service.

Campus

The current physical layout of the Husson University Campus includes Newman Gymnasium, the O'Donnell Commons, home to the Schools of Education and Health, the Peabody academic building, Dickerman Dining Hall, the Dyke Center for Family Business, the NESCom building and the residence halls (Hart, Carlisle, and Bell), The Beardsley Meeting House and Gracie Theatre along with off campus residential apartments for upperclassmen. Two walking trails circle the outer perimeter and offer scenic walks through the Maine forest.

Bangor Theological Seminary and the New England School of Communications, two separate institutions independent of Husson, are also housed on the campus.

Student life

Husson University is a member of the NCAA Division III and fields fourteen varsity sports teams in the North Atlantic Conference.

There are dozens of student clubs and organizations, mostly professional, as well as the Outdoors Club, Student Newspaper, Husson University Theater, GAMERS, GBLT on RYE and Campus Crusade for Christ. Information for all club organizations can be obtained at student activities.

Husson also has six active Greek Organizations on campus, three Sororities; Epsilon Tau Epsilon, Delta Sigma Delta and Kappa Lambda. As well as three fraternities; Mu Sigma Chi, Kappa Delta Phi and Alpha Phi Omega. Each organization prides itself in providing service to the school, students and campus as well as the greater Bangor Maine area. Many of the principles Husson was founded upon came from greek life. Husson's Founder, Chesley Husson was a brother of Kappa Delta Phi and later founded the organization Mu Sigma Chi.
