"Jared Has Aides"

"Jared Has Aides" is the second episode of the sixth season of the animated comedy television series South Park. It was originally broadcast on Comedy Central in the United States on March 6, 2002.

The episode pokes fun at America's obsession with easy weight loss and the idea that a person can lose weight through a diet consisting entirely of fast food.

Plot

The plot focuses around Jared Fogle, longtime spokesman for Subway whose claim to fame is that he lost 180 pounds through a diet consisting of Subway submarine sandwiches. Cartman hatches a plot to sell their own "Jared" to the owner of City Wok, South Park's sole Chinese restaurant: Butters will gain unhealthy amounts of weight, then lose it, then agree to do a commercial for City Wok in which he credits their food with his weight loss.

Meanwhile, Jared Fogle admits to the boys (and to the world) that he had some help losing weight aside from his Subway diet: a personal trainer and a dietician to whom he refers to as his "Aides." Massive confusion arises as people assume that Jared is saying he lost weight because of his AIDS, and Jared is confused as to why people suddenly hate him.

Cultural References

After being fired, Jared walks down the street to the tune of a derivation of Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia," a nod to Tom Hanks' AIDS-stricken character in Philadelphia.

Whenever Jared enters or another character brags about his or her own weight loss, a variation of the same song is sung. ("His name is Jared, He lost a bunch of weight, eatin' those sandwiches.") This derivation is a direct reference to Jared Fogle's first wave of commercials for Subway.

Other Notes

The theme song for this episode (and all episodes from the sixth season) has had Kenny's part removed and replaced with Timmy singing his own name. The "the Fourth Grade" years title card was removed for good in this season, and for the duration of the season, Butters shows up with a title card that reads "the Butters Show" and places it over the "South Park" sign.

This is the first episode in which Kenny is not present at all, having "died" during the previous season in the episode Kenny Dies. It is also the first of several episodes in which Butters stands in as a replacement to the "fourth friend" spot typically occuppied by Kenny.
