File mover (add request)

As I find moving a file's name not more important than moving an article. I know the basic rules for naming the files, and as you could see, I have not made a mistake in doing so. In fact ( contact ) 18:43, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not done You have virtually no experience in the file namespace. -FASTILY (TALK) 18:48, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
But the question remains : When I can move articles, How come I am not allowed to move files ( Specially a trusted user ) ? In fact ( contact ) 19:06, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The main reason why it is restricted is that moving files incorrectly poses a significant risk of losing the files permanently. It's also more complicated than moving pages. People who only work in articles find working in files to be complex and less than intuitive (the same can be said working in the other direction) so this safeguard is put in place to prevent good intentioned users from wrecking stuff.
I laid out the things I look for in the last request you made, which was also declined, and was filed yesterday. Clearly your reading of what was said there was selective. Mine was not, and I found the line "Question : Do I need the project? or does the project need me? In fact ( contact ) 11:58, 13 July 2011 (UTC)" to be a telling and troubling sign.
The answer to that question is "neither". I'm sure you can find some other source of information if you needed it. Wikipedia is by far not the only encyclopedia out there. At the same time, while Wikipedia needs editors, it does not need any one editor in particular, therefore it does not need you specifically. Since there's no way to read your question in a positive light, I'll just be up front with my response to it. Wikipedia values contributors that are willing to work constructively within a communally accepted framework. User rights are decided on merit, where both the amount of experience and the amount of trust an editor has accumulated is weighed against the permission that the user is asking for. Right now, after reapplying for a permission the day after it was denied, and after that little gem I quoted above, I wouldn't support giving you anything past autoconfirmed. I view your experience is minimal, and your trustworthiness and maturity are pretty much zero. File mover is not an entitlement, and you don't qualify right now. Sven Manguard Wha? 21:24, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
To In fact: If you wanted your filemover bit request to be invisible, how come you have asked again? Asking once may be a misunderstanding, but twice in two days will start to get you remembered by people! Graeme Bartlett (talk) 21:50, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
To User:Sven Manguard: What you have mentioned is against WP:NPA. I want the admins reading this, do something about it.
To User Graeme Bartlett: I thought maybe I could have a second chance to be judged. ( As the first one did not go well ) I wanted the admins to focus on me , just me. Regards, In fact ( contact ) 10:01, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If a request is denied once, then any admin will be looking for a significant gap before seeing the next request, which will help to make an assessment of the user. Your inexperience with files also shows in the fact that you have uploaded photos that you have taken yourself here, rather than commons, where all wikis can use them.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:07, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's not true. There is a logical answer for that : commons is filtered in Iran, which means we can not use it easily. I just wanted this right to rename my own files ( in case I make a mistake in choosing a correct name.) and I was not going to use it widely. In fact ( contact ) 04:55, 23 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Having this user right would definitely come in good use. Not only to me (for say, example, I put spelling errors in a file name before uploading it), but I could also correct incorrectly formatted files (there's a whole bunch that I know of) and also take on user requests. I feel as if I'm responsible to have this user right, and I have experience uploading files to Wikipedia in the past. nding·start 04:21, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Whether you get the file mover right or not, Do not under any circumstance use the move function to change a file's type (i.e. move Example.jpg to Example.png). Doing so may irreversibly damage the file. I cannot stress this enough. Instead, save the file on your computer, convert it using a free program like Paint.NET by resaving it under a different file type, then reupload it, making sure you keep the information from the original file description page. It's tedious, but it's exponentially safer.
That aside, you appear to be qualified for the right. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:11, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not done While you are qualified for this right edit-wise, I'm not really certain you understand the purpose of this right, since you stated above that you would use it to reformat files. Please familiarize with this right first, and then come back and re-request it in a few weeks time. -FASTILY (TALK) 08:07, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Now I realize why Sven was bringing that up. By formatting, I actually meant like file titles that have no spaces, etc. I didn't mean like changing .PNG to .JPG or whatever. My bad. nding·start 17:09, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Whatever he originally meant with the word, it's clear that he's not going to change file types now. I'd just give it to him at this point. Sven Manguard Wha? 17:28, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
 Done I agree. -FASTILY (TALK) 18:00, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you guys! :) nding·start 18:05, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations on being assigned the FM user right. I see a reply on Fastily's talk page saying "I mean files that have like no spaces to the proper formatted titles they should be (with spaces and being proper to what it is)" Although, as a matter of principle it's best to leave all files with generally valid names at their locations, even if slightly better names may exist. So for example:

  1. File:TowerBridge'09.jpg should not be renamed to File:Tower_Bridge_2009.jpg only because the latter looks a bit better.
  2. File:Thiswouldbebetterwithspaces.jpg should not be renamed to File:This would be better with spaces.jpg.

To help clean up the names of images related to Arizona high schools. I have done much of this work through rename requests, but I'd do more in less time if I could. Raymie (tc) 20:22, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
 Done -FASTILY (TALK) 21:15, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Some files are written with grammar errors. Leszek Jańczuk (talk) 11:10, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not done due to lack of experience in the File: namespace. Salvio Let's talk about it! 11:25, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
