Al Mulla Group is one of Kuwait's leading business groups with over 10,000 employees operating in seven countries through 30 companies, and affiliations with over 200 international brands and companies. The Group's operations range from automotive and heavy equipment distribution and servicing, electro-mechanical contracting, civil construction, diversified manufacturing to consumer financing, investments, insurance, real estate, office automation product distribution, rental and leasing of vehicles and heavy equipment, and money exchange services.
Established in 1938[1] by then Secretary of State Abdullah Saleh Al Mulla[2], the Group started out when the late Abdullah Al Mulla partnered up with a friend named Saleh Jamal to set up an electrical and domestic appliance store, soon acquiring the GEC franchise from the United Kingdom. A few years later, Abdulla Al Mulla bought Saleh Jamal's shares in the company, handing over management to his eldest son Bader. In 1947, the Bader Al Mulla and Brothers Company was set up acquiring the rights to become a distributor for Chrysler vehicles. Business expansion later followed into areas of marine products, air conditioning, travel and equipment supply[3].
Following the founder's death in 1955, his son Bader became chairman until 1969, with his brothers Najeeb and Anwar becoming his successors; Najeeb as Chairman, and Anwar as Deputy Chairman & CEO. Three years later, the Maseelah Trading Company was founded in 1972[3]. Maseelah Trading acquired the distribution rights for Mitsubishi Motor Vehicles in Kuwait immediately, which led to dramatic growth in the automotive business for the Group.
In 1978, some radical changes were made to the company by the shareholders. A multinational board was appointed, defying the local tradition of having a board composed of only family members, where the company's market position was radically changed. The Group ventured into different markets such as environmental systems, vehicle rental and leasing, fire protection, office equipment, security services, engineering products, computers and insurance consultancy. The group continued to expand and enhance its operations into the 1980s up to today, searching for new opportunities and diversifying its operations in new fields.[3].
Today, the Group is present in various markets and has proven to become one of the most successful business groups in both Kuwait and the Middle East, with leading market positions in its existing lines of operation as well as new operations in fields such as healthcare, hospitality, investments, and others.
