Baku White City is a construction project in Baku, Azerbaijan. It contains 10 urban development projects on the site of Baku's Black City, which has played major role in the oil industry for over a century, performing activities of refining, storage and transportation of oil. Master planned by the British architectural company Atkins, Baku White City is aimed at becoming Baku's new modern center, creating appropriate environment for life and work. The site's 221 hectares are located in the center of Baku Bay and to the east of the city's historic center, also including Nobel Avenue that connects the capital with Heydar Aliyev International Airport.

History

The concept of the project was developed as a response to the decree of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev approving the “Plan of Integrated Action to Improve the Environmental Situation in the Azerbaijan Republic during the Years 2006-2010 “ and in conformity with the order of the Head of the Executive Administration of Baku City in June 2007.[1]
