Three things

Hello: Let me add my welcome to Wikipedia --

Three things, though: Many editors think that blanking your talk page is a bad idea, that is an indication that you have something to hide -- while this isn't formal policy, other editors can find a lot of helpful background on you from the messages here and it is a plain nuisance to have to do that by browsing through page history. Most of us formally archive our talk pages so that that they are convenient for any needed future reference.

The second isn't even formalized, but something you might want to note. I came here because I noticed that you had made 35 edits to Long Island (Massachusetts) over the last couple of days. I'd like to suggest that you use Show Preview much more often and Save Page much less. Alternately, do the work in a sandbox -- click on User:Pgrig/Sandbox1 to create one -- and then copy text to the article only when done. The reason I ask is that for those of us who watch a particular page, it makes our watchlist much longer without need. I note 62 edits on Plotting board over six days -- I don't watch that page, but those who do will have the same reaction.

Finally, whether you make fewer saves or not, please add an edit summary to each one. Again, this is an aid to those who watch a particular page, since a good edit summary will make it less likely that they will waste time reading your changes. Thank you. . . Jim - Jameslwoodward (talkcontribs) 16:21, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jim Woodward--

Thanks for the tips. I have been doing quite a bit of Saving! I'll try to seep an eye on that. I suppose I didn't think many folks would be watching my new Coast Artillery pages, but I guess my efforts at adding a Ft. Strong section to Long Island got you attention. :-) I isolated that work in a new Section, and easily could have written that off-line before uploading.

I blanked what I thought was unimportant stuff off my user page. I confess that the most recent item was an (incorrect)condemnation of a graphic I had created and uploaded which was hit with a big ugly copyright violation sticker that remained in force for two or three weeks. It irritated me, so I wiped it.

By the way, are you the chap I ran into (I can't remember how) who sent me the image of an octagonal base for a Coast Artillery observation instrument that was in a bunker somewhere on an island off the MA coast? :-) If so, I have now progressed to having seen a dozen or more of those, but yours was the first! Thanks.

I've been adding more edit summaries, and will try to be more reliable on that as well. Perhaps I can atone for two of my sins at once time by (1) making fewer saves and thereby (2) occasioning fewer summaries! :-) -Paul Pgrig (talk) 18:29, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. How do I "watch" a certain page, anyway?

It's always a relief when a newbie takes advice well -- you'd be surprised how many don't, so thank you.
I don't think I sent you an image -- my only involvement with coast artillery was adding significantly to Fort Banks Mortar Battery, which I did solely because it is an NRHP site and I photographed it.
You access your watch list by clicking on "My Watchlist" in the the string at the top of the page. You can add items to it ad hoc by checking "Watch this page" above the "Save page | Show preview | Show changes" boxes at the bottom of the edit screen while editing. Or, as many of us prefer, you can add pages automatically by checking appropriate boxes at My Preferences > Watchlist
I notice your upload of File:Hitchcock Gun 1.jpg to Wikipedia. Although it is not mandatory, users are strongly urged to upload images to Wikimedia Commons rather than any of the individual language Wikipedias unless there are copyright or other special issues that would preclude it. Commons is available to all of the language Wikipedias. Images there join the 6+ million images already there and have the benefit of its comprehensive category system. Most of the images that you see on Wikipedia are hosted on Commons, as you can tell by the URL or image description. If I can help you with that, don't hesitate to ask. . . Jim - Jameslwoodward (talkcontribs) 22:10, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. I have thus far uploaded some 50+ images for my various articles, and probably have 25 more still to go. They are either my own photos (ex-professional photographer who does a lot of fortifications field work)) or Army (Coast Artillery, Army Engineers) work. I did this the way I thought I was told to, by using the Upload File link on the sidebar menu at the top of each page. But now I see this has WP and Commons options. :-) Makes me no never mind--I'd be happy to switch over...although the Commons description form seems to have more categories and be more complex. Are there limits to people using my photos, released as I do, on WP? (I had thought not.)
By the way, I am rewriting the Fort Strong article now (and that will probably take another dozen images), using a subpage of my User page. And just for spite, I'm SAVEing it a lot! :-) But at least I'm paying some attention to you.... Pgrig (talk) 14:22, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

LOL -- anyone who is watching your subpage deserves what he gets.....

To answer your more serious question, there are no technical limits to the use of images on WP:EN. However:

  • Commons images are likely to be seen by far more people and more likely to be used in other places, both on and off WMF -- it's a kick when the Boston Globe uses your images on a project -- that probably won't happen off of WP:EN
  • Commons images are easy to use on all of the WMF projects. While it is possible to call up an image from WP:EN on, say, the Spanish Wikipedia, it requires special syntax, and a Spanish language editor may never see the image in the first place.
  • Commons has an elaborate and well maintained category system which makes it much easier for a potential user to find your images
  • Commons allows user categories which allow you to keep track of the images you have uploaded, see Commons:Category:Files_by_User:Jameslwoodward
  • Commons allows you to create Galleries of images and has a rudimentary automatic gallery tool.

Finally, you should understand that all suitably licensed images will eventually be transferred to Commons. This is a process that combines bots with humans; since Admin time is in short supply, any user who uploads a lot of images in "the wrong place" will not be popular.

The best thing would be if you were to upload all of your images to Commons and then ask for deletion of the copies on WP. This does not require any change to the articles, an article on WP:EN will automatically look for File:XYZ first on EN, then on Commons. Second best, would be to simply change the destination of all future images. . . Jim - Jameslwoodward (talkcontribs) 16:43, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Did you forget to add a license tag for this image when uploading.?

Wikipedia takes copyrights seriously, so images need to have an appropriate license tag

You may wish to read Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags#For_image_creators which will assist you :) Sfan00 IMG (talk) 17:06, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File source and copyright licensing problem with File:10-inch-D1896-cutaway.jpg

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:10-inch-D1896-cutaway.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, we also need to know the terms of the license that the copyright holder has published the file under, usually done by adding a licensing tag. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged files may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the file will be deleted 48 hours after 18:00, 16 July 2010 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 18:00, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Better source request for File:12-inch-in-casemate.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:12-inch-in-casemate.jpg. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:18, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

re: deletion of images

Hello - thanks for the message. Both files were deleted under WP:CSD#F4 as lacking source information. I try very hard not to speedy-delete files (or articles) unless the uploader/creator was notified, but these must have slipped by me somehow.

We need to know where you got the images - the URL of the site, or the page of which book you scanned, or wherever it was. "U.S. Army photo" is insufficient. Without that specificity, we can't verify that the image is in the public domain. Sadly, we have many editors who upload images claiming {{PD-USGov}} (more often {{PD-self}}) status when they actually found them through a Google Images search. That's no reflection on you, and I certainly know you didn't get them from powerpuffgirlsfiringmortars.com, but we need to know the source nonetheless.

As a courtesy, I've restored the images for you, and I've reset the warnings about speedy deletion to expire one week from today, so you have seven (7) days to provide sourcing. When you supply specific source information for each file, simply remove the {{di-no source}} template and save the page. Even better, upload them to Commons as several editors on this page have encouraged you to do (but you'll still have to be specific about the source). If I can answer questions or help you further, don't hesitate to ask. Thanks again for the message. :-) KrakatoaKatie 19:49, 19 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. I feel I was clear in my first message, right above this one - you need to add the information to the files yourself, so there are no misunderstandings or losses in translation. I gave you instructions in how to do so, and said that when you were through you could remove the deletion tag. I reset the notices so you had another seven days in which to do this.
I've restored the images one last time so you can provide the source information yourself, and I've added a template to those pages to help you. I even moved the descriptions you gave into the 'summary' fields of the template, which is the correct place. Make sure you give detail about the source, the author/photographer, and the date it was taken (as best you can). I'm an involved admin now so I won't delete or restore these files again. The template I added is pretty self-explanatory, but you can ask for more help at Media copyright questions. Thanks. KrakatoaKatie 05:48, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Coast Artillery Corps

would love to see this as its own page. with a list of units. if you want to start it just cut and paste whats in the coast artillery article to the redirect page. or I might get a wild hair and do it Brian in denver (talk) 18:03, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ft. Heath

I updated the part of Fort Heath concerning the Radar Station and ADA Nike control center. Tried to clean it up also. I hope it helped, but as I know little about coastal artillery, I left that part of the article alone. No one owns anything here, and anything I write is always subject to change by someone else. Making things better is aways a good thing :) Bwmoll3 (talk) 19:37, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Nike/Radar locations appear to be just to the west, behind the fortifcations, About here (N 42 23' 18" W 70 58' 15") I would think. Probably around the tennis court and what is now a park. Airphoto In addition, this photo site should help :) Photos of Fort Heath, Winthrop, MA (MM-1) Regards, Brent Bwmoll3 (talk) 20:16, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
