Tinashe Jorgenson Kachingwe (born February 6, 1993), known professionally as Tinashe, is an American actress, singer and dancer. She is known as the former lead singer of American girl group the Stunners.

Early life

She was born in Lexington, Kentucky[1] and named "Tinashe" Jorgensen, which means "We are with God" in Shona, by her grandfather. She spent her early years in DeKalb, Illinois, as a baby model and attended Littlejohn Elementary School, with her two younger brothers, Thulani and Kudzai, but, at age eight moved to Los Angeles, California where she attended Crescenta Valley High School for a little over a year before finishing early. Her father is Zimbabwean and her mother is a mix of Irish, Norwegian, and Danish.[1][2]

Career

2007-2010: the Stunners

Tinashe performing with the Stunners at KISS FM 103.5 on April 30, 2010.

In 2007, at age 14, Tinashe was approached by former pop-star Vitamin C to join an all-girl singing and dancing group.[1] She quickly joined Allie Gonino, Hayley Kiyoko, Kelsey Sanders (later replaced by Lauren Hudson in 2009) and Marisol Esparza to form the Stunners.[2][3] Six months after forming, the group signed with Columbia Records and released a single titled "Bubblegum" to iTunes along with the official video for the single and as contributed a song to the iCarly soundtrack.[4] The single and video were later removed from iTunes.

In 2009, the group left Columbia Records[5] and signed a production deal with Lionsgate Entertainment, who also produced a scripted television show pilot based on the group, which was ordered by MTV.[2][5][6] In October of that year, the girls released a 5-song EP and shot a music video for their promo single "We Got It" which was released on February 22, 2010.[5]

They released a holiday single in December 2009, produced by Desmond Child, and written by the five members of the group,[7] titled "Santa Bring My Soilder Home" and encouraged donations the USO for soldiers overseas, not with their families for the holidays.[8] The group performed the song on The Today Show[9] as well as The Wendy Williams Show.[5][8] After meeting with various labels interested in the group, they signed to Universal Republic Records[2][5] in 2010 and released their first single "Dancin' Around the Truth" which featured the New Boyz to iTunes as well as Top 40 radio stations.[10] The music video premiered June 2, just before the group was announced as an opening act on Justin Bieber's My World Tour.[2][11]

They finished their run after twenty dates on the tour and returned to LA to record new songs with producers and writers such as Toby Gad, The Cataracs, Dave Broome[12], Livvi Franc[13], Sheppard Soloman, Jimmy Harry and Tony Kanal of No Doubt fame.[14] They shot a fourth music video in the desert of California in November for their new song "Spin The Bottle" which premiered on December 31, 2010. A full album along with an official second single titled "Heart Stops Beating", written by Tinashe and Allie and produced by Orange Factory Music was planned[15], but cancelled when the group split in 2011.[5][16][17]

2011-present: Solo

On March 16, 2011 Tinashe announced that she was now pursuing a solo career and working on a solo album.[2][18] Since her departure, the band has separated.[19][20] She also announced via her official twitter page that she would be singing the theme song to the CW show Shedding for the Wedding.[21] On April 6, 2010, a demo solo song Chainsaw, produced by The Cataracs leaked online.[22]

Tinashe also sang background vocals for her label mate Bobby Brackins single A1 which also features Dev and well as being featured on a song for his upcoming album, titled "Cake".[23] A mini-movie/music video for the single was shot in Las Vegas on June 4, 2011 over the course of 17 straight hours.[24][25][26] The video premiered on July 14, 2011. On May 3, 2011, Tinashe gave her first televised solo performance in front of 57,000 people during the Dodgers VS. Cubs baseball game singing the National Anthem and "God Bless America".[27][28][29]

She released her first solo music video, a cover of Lil Wayne's single "How to Love" on June 24, 2011.[30] The video, not a single but a promotional viral video, depicts Tinashe singing in a small white room, removing her makeup cut between shots of her in a black dress where she takes pills and eventually passes out, presumably dead. Tinashe stated on Twitter that the video was "for all [the] girls out there who are having a tough time."[31] The song was later released as a free digitial download via Tinashe's official website.[32][33] Following the video's release Tinashe confirmed she has been released from her recording contract with Universal Republic.[34]

Announced on August 5, 2011, Tinashe will release her first solo single Artificial People by the music production company OFM, famous for their work with Jay Sean, Britney Spears, and Beyoncé, featuring Tinashe.[35][36] The single will follow the format of David Guetta's singles, where Tinashe provides all leading vocals with OFM producing. The single will be the first official single from Tinashe as a solo artist, and will follow with a campaign[35] and a music video.[37] The single was released on September 12, 2011[38] and has received positive reviews with MuuMuse.com saying "Tinashe’s got some serious potential to soar with this supreme club sizzler–an instant smash from start to finish."[38] and MTV Buzzworthy calling it a "smash hit smorgasbord".[39]

Tinashe released her third solo music video, and second viral video cover song, We Found Love (originally sung by Rihanna) to her YouTube and official website on October 22, 2011.[40][41]On November 25, 2011 Tinashe released the music video for Can't Say No, her second original solo song as an exlcusive premiere and part of the "Tinashe Takeover" on DefPenRadio.com. [42] The song samples Britney Spears's song Blur from her sixth studio album Circus.[43] The song was released for download on November 28, 2011, after her official Facebook page reached 10,000 "likes".[44][45] It is unknown if the song will appear on Tinashe's debut solo album which is set to also include production from Tone Def and Jay Sean, to be released in 2012.[45]

On December 20, 2011, Tinashe announced that she would be releasing a mixtape entitled In Case We Die in 2012.[46] A promo single from the mixtape entitled "Chainless" was released to iTunes the next day.[47] Tinashe clarified on Twitter that "Chainless" was a "fun, character [song], dedicated to the west", rather than an official single from the mixtape.[48] The music video was released at midnight on December 21. It was directed by Bobby Brackins and Nic Nac, being the first video that Tinashe has not directed.[46]
