Iggy Azalea (born Amethyst in 1990) is an Australian songwriter and rapper. Azalea started rapping at 14 in Australia.[1] She is perhaps better known for her promotional songs "Pu$$y" and "My World" whose music videos went viral on YouTube. Azalea signed a record deal with Interscope Records in 2012.[2] Her debut studio album "The New Classic" will be released in June 2012.[3][4]

Life and career

1990–2011: Early life and Career beginnings

Iggy Azalea was born in New South Wales, Australia.[5][6] Her father was a comic artist and painter and her mother cleaned holiday houses and hotels. Azalea says her father "made her look at [art] as a teenager" which has always influenced her life and work.[7] Her birth name is Amethyst (she hasn't disclosed her last) but she started using a stage name, Iggy Azalea. Iggy Azalea was the name of her family's dog while growing up.[8] In 2011, Iggy Azalea started uploading several freestyle videos that went viral on YouTube. In early September, Perez Hilton discovered and posted her first music video "Pu$$y". The visuals, featuring Iggy and friends suggestively slurping ice creams, were filmed in the territory of street gang Rollin 60s.

2011-present: Ignorant Art, record deal and upcoming projects

On September 27, 2011, Azalea released her first free mixtape, "Ignorant Art", saying she made it "with the intent to make people question and redefine old ideals” .[9] In November 2011, she released a music video for another promotional song "My World" featuring a cameo from character actor and former wrestler Tiny Lister, which earned her more attention due to its rising popularity online.[10] "It’s supposed to have like, all the ridiculousness of a big-budget ’90s video, but then chopped and screwed," Azalea explains.[11]

Azalea revealed in December that she will be releasing her debut album, "The New Classic", in the first quarter of 2012. She also said she will be signing a record label deal soon and "once that's sorted out and I establish an over all sound and direction for the album I will be able to know what artists would make for a dynamic collaboration".[12] In January 2012, Azalea released the visuals for her final promotional mixtape song, "The Last Song".[13] On January 27, Azalea confirmed she had finally signed to Interscope Records and her debut album, "The New Classic", would be released in June and a debut single in March.[14] Iggy Azalea is getting a co-sign from T.I.. The Atlanta rapper will executive produce the newcomer’s upcoming debut. Iggy Said “I’m working with a different production company for my album than what I did for my mixtape [Ignorant Art], and I don’t know who yet,” Iggy told MTV News. “I’m still looking. T.I.’s gonna be helping me with it, kinda like A&Ring, kinda like executive-producing.” Azalea explained how she came into contact with T.I.. “He called me up and was like, ‘Please.’ And I was like, ‘Definitely. You’re Tip. I love you, of course.’ So he’s gonna be kinda helping me out, like just kinda reaching out to people and helping me find production and pointing me in the direction of things that I might like.” “We’re gonna start on that next week together. I’ll probably fly out to Atlanta and we’ll do it in between there because he’s weird with traveling and stuff. I understand. We’re in touch with each other. I have legal issues, he has legal issues. I get it. So hopefully that will be really dynamic and it’ll help speed things along.” Iggy is eyeing a summer release for her debut The New Classic. “Hopefully if all goes to plan, my album will be out in June and I’ll have it recorded by the end of the month.”[15]

=Influences

She started rapping at the age of 14 but was obsessed with rap from age 11 when she heard “Baby Don’t Cry”. She also regularly mentions her early influence by Tupac in her interviews, "I was sickly obsessed. I had every picture of Tupac ever printed on my wall".[16] Azalea also draws and paints as an hobby. She also mentions Andre 3000, Kanye West, Gwen Stefani and Grace Kelly as some of her inspirations.[17][18][19]
