Thuppakki (Tamil: துப்பாக்கி; English: Gun) is an upcoming Tamil action thriller film written and directed by A. R. Murugadoss, which will star Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal.[3][4] The film, featuring background score and soundtrack composed by Harris Jayaraj and cinematography handled by Santhosh Sivan,[5] is scheduled for a mid-2012 release.

Production
Development
In July 2010, sources reported that Vijay would star in an action film by A. R. Murugadoss, after completing his ongoing projects.[6][7] Vijay's father S. A. Chandrasekhar was to produce the film initially, before Kalaipuli S. Thanu took over the project.[8] The film became titled as Thuppakki, contrary to early reports, according to which Maalai Nerathu Mazhaithuli was considered as the title.[9][10] National Film Award winners Sreekar Prasad and Thotta Tharani were roped in for editing and art direction, respectively.[11]
Casting
Deepika Padukone was first reported to essay the female lead.[12] Later several actresses including Sonam Kapoor,[13][14] Priyanka Chopra,Cite error: A <ref>

(see the help page).[15] were rumoured to play the role. Kajal Aggarwal was eventually confirmed,[16][17] who went on declare Thuppaaki as her biggest film in her career.[18] Akshara Gowda was cast to play the second female lead.[19] Gautham Kurup was chosen to play a significant role,[20] while Vidyut Jamwal, who was simultaneously shooting for Ajith Kumar's Billa II as well, would be playing a role with negative shades.[21][22] Sathyan, following several collaborations with Vijay, confirmed that he was part of this project, too.[23]
Filming
According to early reports, filming was to commence at Thiruchendur and continue in Mumbai.[24] Supposed to start on November 26, 2011,[25] it began on 5 December in Mumbai.[26] Vijay would appear in a completely different with a different hairstyle as well as a facial makeover.[27] The first schedule that lasted for 35 days was completed by January 2012.[28] The climax featuring a stunt sequence involving Vijay and 60 fighters was shot using nearly 7 cameras.[29]
Release
The distribution rights were bought by Gemini Film Circuit which produced and distributed Nanban.[30] A dubbed same-titled Telugu version of the film is also expected to release simultaneously.[31]
Soundtrack

The soundtrack will be composed by Harris Jayaraj, working for the second successive Vijay film after Nanban. Akon was rumoured to sing one song for the album.[32]
