Black Hippy is an American hip hop supergroup, from South Central, Los Angeles, California, formed in 2009,[1] and is composed of rappers Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q.
History
Career beginnings and formation (2006–10)
The group was formed in 2009 when all of its members were signed to Top Dawg Entertainment, a Los Angeles-based independent record label.[1][2]
Solo albums (2011–present)
In 2011, Black Hippy received co-signs from Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg and also received a co-sign from Tech N9ne who was on the verge of signing the group to his Strange Music roster.[3]
In March 2012, MTV announced that Top Dawg Entertainment, have closed a joint venture deal with Interscope Records and Aftermath Entertainment. Under the new deal, Kendrick Lamar's debut studio album, Good Kid in a Mad City will be jointly released via Aftermath/Top Dawg/Interscope, while releases from the rest of Black Hippy will be distributed via Top Dawg/Interscope.[4][5][6]
The group has worked together on several songs that appeared on their solo albums, though they still have yet to put out a joint project. An unofficial mixtape consisting of some of their collective work was released on Datpiff.com in 2011.[7]
