Pacific Fighters, known in Russia as Pearl Harbor (Перл-Харбор), is a World War II combat flight simulator for PCs, the high quality of this air combat simulation is often used as a benchmark to compare others. It is flown online by gamers (Online fighter squadron communities) using a standard IP address or a client server such as "hyperlobby" regularly but can be flown offline as well, claimed the developers. Online capabilities of the game were, however, disappointing. Very few games could actually be played because the servers were very poor, and connections were difficult to make.
The game claims to access over 74 different aircraft, however the actual figure is around 40 with many of these aircraft being fairly similar versions of each other. The other aircraft can be flown only by the AI. Pacific Fighters works with a standard joystick but many users actually have flight controls hooked to their PC's including joystick, throttle quadrant, and sometimes rudder pedals. Commonly used ones are the Microsoft Sidewinder Joystick, The Saitek X52 Flight Control System, and the Thrustmaster Cougar FCS. Pacific Fighters also works well with Track IR, a camera mounted system that increases your visual experience by providing head turning motions without using your keyboard.
There are new objects not found in the earlier games, including aircraft carriers (both stationary and moving), concrete hangars and rubber dinghies for downed pilots. The games features aircraft which were used in the Pacific by the air forces of Australia, the Empire of Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. Several of the career levels are glitched, with AI pilots flying into mountains. This only appears to happen on the New Guinea map
