Rania (Korean: 라니아, stylized as RaNia or RANIA) is a six-member South Korean girl group, who debuted in South Korea and was produced by Teddy Riley and DR Music.[1] Despite being a Korean group, member Joy is Thai,[2] while Riko was raised in Japan. They released their debut track "Dr. Feel Good" in 2011.[3] All members speak fluent English, Korean, Thai, and Japanese. Before debuting, RaNia received three years worth of vocal training.

As of May 2011, Teddy Riley has officially ended his professional relationship with RaNia after taking to his twitter to reveal that he had a fall out with RaNia's Korean record label, DR Music.[4] Darkchild has expressed interest in working with RaNia in the future.

Career

Predebut

Rania was originally set to debut in mid 2010 as a six member group,[5] however member T-ae was chosen to star alongside former 2PM member/leader, Jay Park in Hype Nation. Later, Riko (Rania's leader at the time) and Saem were chosen to star in Hype Nation too, causing DR Music to push back the group's debut. In this time, two additional members were chosen but one of them (Sarah Wang) withdrew from the group before debuting. With her withdrawal, the group decided to debut as a seven member group and later look for her replacement.

In an interview with Donga News, Jooyi stated that she had turned down the offer of joining the now popular group 2NE1 as a 5th member.[6]

Debut with Dr. Feel Good, controversies and Masquerade

Originally, it was announced that the group would debut in both Korea and America at the same time. It was also announced that they would be working with producer Teddy Riley. Two songs were composed for Rania “DR Feel Good” and “Masquerade", which he revealed were originally given to Lady Gaga. Speaking about how the deal came out, their company revealed that Rania was contracted with Teddy Riley’s new agency in order to promote in America, in which he was discussing the music distribution rights with Sony Music and Universal Music. Along with this, Rania was going to work with Lady Gaga‘s choreographer, Richard Jackson.[7]

In March 2011, it was announced that Rania would finally debut in April 2011, with a showcase being held on April 6.[8] At this time, Rania was revealed to be debuting as a 8 member group, consisting of Riko, Saem, Xia, Jooyi, Di, Joy, Tae and Yijo. However, upon their debut single's release, Yijo was not included.[9]

It was never formally announced as to why Yijo never appeared with the group for their promotions, however Yijo herself revealed that due to visa issues, she was unable to join them for their debut, and after a few months, left the group.

They group debuted on April 6 on the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) music program, Music Bank, with the song "Dr. Feel Good". However, their music video and live performances for "Dr. Feel Good" caused controversy in Korea as some viewers felt that their image and concept were too provocative.[10] RaNia were forced to change their provocative choreography and make minor changes to the outfits.[11][12] In a later interview, the members of RaNia expressed their regrets on stirring up such a controversy because of their outfits, but still believed that they were not as sexually suggestive as viewers thought.

After the conclusion of their debut single "Dr. Feel Good", the group returned in June with their second single "Masquerade" on Music Bank.[13] An English Version of the song originally appeared on their debut single, however the Korean Version was not. They promoted the Korean Version in Korea, including appearing on music shows.

Despite their debut single included English Versions of both "DR Feel Good" and "Masquerade", the group never advanced into America at this time.

Just after promotions for Masquerade finished, Teddy Riley made ambiguous tweets concerning his future with RaNia, and soon made a formal announcement that he had left RaNia after falling out with the Korean record label, DR Music, the main record label of RaNia.

Because of Riley's leave, RaNia's overseas debut in the U.S. was put into question. However, DR Music states RaNia's activities in the U.S. are still active. It was later announced that RaNia would work with renowned producers Brave Brothers for their single "Pop Pop Pop".

Time to Rock Da Show

It was announced that the group would be coming back in Korea in the last few months of 2011 with popular producer "Brave Brothers"[14]

The group released their second mini-album, "Time to Rock Da Show" on November 16, 2011.[15] The title track, "Pop Pop Pop", was promoted on all major music shows, the first being on M! Countdown.[16]

Return With Killer

The group confirmed that they would be making a comeback on September 2 with their first broadcast on Inkigayo with the song "Killer". The mini album of the same name is presumed to be released around the same time. [17]

Appearances

T-ae, Xia and Joy participated in the variety show "Oh! My School" on KBS while T-ae and Joy appeared on Let's Go! Dream Team's Summer Girl Special. On September 17, 2011, Rania performed Dr. Feel Good, Masquerade and a cover of Stand Up for Love (originally by Destiny's Child) in "Suara Kami!" held in Malaysia in conjunction of Malaysia's Day celebration.[18]
