A.M.SNIPER
== A.M.SNiPER - Anthony Melas ==
Anthony Melas aka A.M SNiPER was born in England on 14th May 1982 and grew up between his hometown of London and his cultural home of Cyprus; more specifically, Ayia Napa. His first taste of performing came during his teenage years when he spent his summer’s DJing in Ayia Napa’s legendary Black & White nightclub under the guidance of his uncle, DJ Melfin. It was here that he learnt about the varying styles of hip hop from a wide range of clubbers from all over Europe. When he was 16 he started producing which eventually led to him rapping Career
SNiPER’s first recording success was with the UK chart-topping So Solid Crew – as both a producer and band member. His production and rapping credits for So Solid include Platinum selling album ‘They Don’t Know’ [1] which got to number 6 in the UK Album chart. He had a cameo appearance as his DJ persona in ‘Haters’ [2] and ‘Ride With Us’ [3] both from this album.
His influence on the following album ‘2nd Verse’ [4] included production of four of the tracks ‘2nd Verse’, ‘Colder’, ‘Bou Bas’ and the ‘Bou Bas (Remix)’.
In The Cyprus Weekly interview from September 2003 Haji Mike wrote that “He is the first producer based in Cyprus to crack the UK charts in such a big way” and again in October 2003 “SoSolid released their latest single ‘Broken Silence’ which went in at number 9 in the charts. Not only is this an achievement for the group but more specifically, it’s a huge achievement for SNiPER.”[1]
Other notable early achievements include the official remix of the Cassius Henry single ‘The One’ [5] featuring Freeway. SNiPER’s remix ‘The One’ (SNiPER Remix) 1 also featured an appearance from Kanye West and entered UK Singles Chart at number 56 week 27/2004 and stayed there for one week.
From 2004-2007 SNiPER spent much of his time becoming established in his family businesses Club Black & White, Waterworld and Radio Napa. He was DJing at Clubs around the world as well as developing his own musical style with the likes of B-Hi (Memphis Bleek’s then manager and cousin of Jay-Z). Through this working relationship he met Memphis Bleek, Green Lantern and The Roc. During Jay-Z’s Athens Tour in 2006, this group got together in the studio and in just 3 days recorded a mixtape - “The Scope’s on You Volume 1”. Bleek flew over to Greece to shoot the video ‘Around the World’ and this received video play across Europe on MTV and the single was played on many of the major UK radio stations. It topped the HMV UK download charts for 4 weeks in August 2007. The CD was mounted onto the cover of HipHop Connection magazine in January 2008 and also featured on popular hip hop websites hiphop.com and allstarhiphop.com. Memphis Bleek also featured further on SNiPER’s tracks including, ‘Move Maker’ in 2008 and the ‘Dat Body (Remix)' in 2010. They performed together at Club Ice in Cyprus in 2004 and 2007 and Acrotiri club in Athens in 2007.
He took the opportunity to re launch his solo career at the first Mediterranean music festival – Medfest in Nicosia, Cyprus in 2007. The festival saw him perform with 50 Cent as the support and opening act along with Memphis Bleek, Akon, Julian Marley and Mutya Buena formerly of the Sugababes.
When asked if he was nervous to open for 50 Cent at Medfest in Cyprus he said “I can’t lie, I get nervous before every show I do, whether it’s 100, 1000, or even 20,000 people, so it’s just going to be the same feeling. It’s the biggest international music festival in the Mediterranean, and apart from 50 Cent, artists like Akon, Julian Marley, Amerie, Mutya and Memphis Bleek are also going to be there.”
After the success of the first mixtape SNiPER released his second mixtape ‘The Scope’s on You Volume 2’ hosted by DJ Green Lantern as a free download in 2009. The European remix of ‘AREA’ from this mixtape featured Curtis Young and Rick Ross. His single ‘DAT BODY’ which started as an underground track in 2009 topped the Amazon download Charts in August 2009 reaching Number 1. It also had a top 10 position in the HMV UK download charts in August 2009. ‘DAT BODY’ featured on BBC Radio1 Xtra with a live performance broadcast in Summer 2010 from his club Black & White in Ayia Napa, Cyprus. It was released in Cyprus in 2010 and had commercial success with sales achieving Gold.
In 2011 SNiPER recorded ‘Black and White’, a freestyle of Whiz Kalifa’s track ‘Black & Yellow’, which was a surprise hit in Cyprus and the UK. It was played in clubs and London radio stations and the tongue in cheek video scored over 70,000 views on Youtube. On 11.11.11 SNiPER released an EP aptly named ‘11’. The tracks include 'NOiSE', 'DiSTORTED', and 'SYSTEM'. He released a video for the first of the singles 'NoiSE' which amassed over 109,000 views in the first weekend of release. The music is a fusion of genres including Hip Hop, Heavy Metal and Dubstep.
In June 2012 SNiPER changed his name for recording purposes to A.M. SNiPER for the release of his single ROAR. This received plays on the Fearne Cotton Show on Radio 1 [6], ((Charlie Sloth)) show on ((1Xtra)). He was interviewd for RWD magazine about his collaborations with
