The Sydney Derby[1] is an intra-city local derby in Australia's premier football (soccer) competition the A-League. It is contested between the two Sydney teams in the competition, Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers FC.

History

The Sydney Derby is a part of the East vs West rivalry,[2] of the same dynamic that takes place throughout sport and life in Sydney.[3] The round 3 inaugural Derby match was the most anticipated match of the season.[4] It is considered to be a match that "sells itself" and was expected to be sold out.[5][6]

The Sydney Derby began in the eighth season of the 2012–13 A-League season, with the first meeting between the two clubs in Round 3 on 20 October 2012, hosted by Western Sydney Wanderers at Parramatta Stadium.[7] The attendence for the first ever Sydney Derby was 19,126. The Sydney Derby is one of two A-League intra-city derbies, the other being the Melbourne Derby.[8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]
