The Evolution of Man is the fourth studio album by British recording artist Example. The album was released on 19 November 2012 through the Ministry of Sound record label.

Background and development

Example tweeted that on the plane to Sydney he planned on writing some songs for a new album and he would be listening to Kasabian's new album for lyrical inspiration. Whilst in Australia for 2 months, the singer/rapper planned to write the entire album in the time he spent there.

The Playing in the Shadows arena tour saw the live debuts of three tracks - "Coming Back" with Calvin Harris; later renamed "We'll Be Coming Back", "Whisper" produced by AN21 & Max Vangeli and "Where Did The Sun Go" produced by Alvin Risk, which was eventually dropped from the album by Alvin's choice.[1] A fourth track, "Come Taste The Rainbow", produced by Benga [2] was due to get its live debut on the tour; however despite being on the official setlist, it was replaced by "Last Ones Standing".

On 25 July 2012 Example announced via Twitter that the name of the lead single from his fourth album was "Say Nothing" - produced by Dirty South, also revealing it would premiere Monday 30 July 2012 on Capital FM. The track, alongside "Perfect Replacement" (produced by Feed Me), received its live debut on 18–19 August 2012 at the V Festival.

On 30 July 2012 Example revealed the single artwork for "Say Nothing" via Twitter [3] and an iTunes preorder became available.[4]

After fans' complaints about the lack of dubstep influence in "Say Nothing", Example responded to a comment on Facebook, saying "wait for the album, I'm not gonna fill the album with the same sounding song, and I'm not gonna keep releasing the same 'dubstep' or 'electro' record".[5]

On 9 August 2012 Example tweeted revealing that Alesso had produced an 'emotional' track for the album called "Queen Of Your Dreams".[6]

Graham Coxon is responsible for the guitars on four album tracks: "Say Nothing", "Blood From A Stone", "Crying Out For Help" and "Snakeskin".[7]

On 23 August 2012 Example tweeted revealing that Skream had produced a track titled "Sitting Comfortably" for the album. This was later renamed "Are You Sitting Comfortably?".[8]

On 20 September 2012, Example announced the standard edition tracklist.[9][10][11] He also announced the producers for each track via Twitter, and revealed that nine of the tracks are explicit.[12]

The promotional video for "Come Taste the Rainbow" premiered on 19 October 2012 on Hunger TV. This was also uploaded later to Example's official YouTube channel.[13]

In the week leading up to the release of the album, all the tracks appeared briefly on YouTube and/or Dailymotion in their entirity, before being taken down. The album has completely leaked.[14] A 6-track CD sampler was distributed to radio stations and DJs shortly before release, and Example retweeted several fans whose CDs had arrived early due to pre-ordering.[15][16]

On 15 November, Greg James at BBC Radio 1 had the exclusive first play of "Perfect Replacement", with Example claiming that he "wanted it to be a single" but that there were "five or six" tracks that could be chosen as the third single. Previous tweets have hinted towards "Queen Of Your Dreams" becoming the third single.

Gleave's personal favourite tracks from the album are "Crying Out For Help" and "Blood From A Stone".[17]

Singles

  • "Say Nothing" is the album's lead single. It is produced by Dirty South, and was released on 16 September 2012. The single debuted at #2 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • "Close Enemies" is the second single from the album. It is produced by Alex Smith, and was released on 11 November 2012. The single debuted at #37 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • "Queen Of Your Dreams" is expected to be released as the third single from the album in February 2013.[18][19] It is produced by Alesso.[20] However, in an interview with Radio 1, Elliot stated that the third single was not confirmed yet, and several tracks could be singles. "Perfect Replacement" was mentioned as a possibility. [citation needed]
