Far Cry 3 is an open world role-playing first-person shooter video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal in conjunction with Ubisoft Massive, Ubisoft Red Storm, Ubisoft Reflections,[5] and Ubisoft Shanghai and published by Ubisoft for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It is the sequel to 2008's Far Cry 2.[9] The game was originally set for release on September 4, 2012 in North America and September 6 in Europe; however, it was subsequently delayed until November 29, 2012 for Australia, November 30 for Europe, and December 4 for North America due to the developers tweaking the final release version of the game.

Far Cry 3 is set on a tropical island found somewhere at the intersection of the Indian and Pacific Oceans.[10] The main goal of the game is to save your kidnapped friends and escape from the islands and their unhinged inhabitants.

Gameplay

Far Cry 3 is an open world first-person shooter, which also features role-playing game elements including experience points, skill trees, and a crafting system. The player has the ability to take cover behind objects to break enemies lines of sight and also to peek around and over cover and blindfire. The player will also have the ability to perform silent "takedowns" by performing melee attacks from above, below, or close behind. The game's narrative director, Jason Vandenberghe, said that the story mode map will be around ten times larger than in the game's previous installments, indicating that it is still an open world sandbox game. Players will be given the ability to survey and plan out their attacks with stealth takedown combinations and also tag enemies with your camera in order to track their movement once they break the player's line of sight.[11]

Plot

After Jason Brody and several friends go to an island in vacation, they are captured by a group pirates to be sold as slaves. The game begins with a video of their exploits on the island, before the video pulls back, revealed to be a cut together video on a cell phone, which is presented to a captured Jason by Vaas, the de facto leader of the pirates. After Vaas leaves, Jason and his brother Grant escape, and discuss their plans on rescuing heir friends right outside the encampment where they were held. Grant is suddenly shot by Vaas, who gives Jason a 30 second head start before they hunt him down. Running away, a panicked Jason repeats the plans to himself, before being attacked by a pirate, who he stabs in self defense, causing him to panic more. Running across a bridge, an attack chopper shoots the bridge down, sending him into the water where he passes out. Waking up, Jason is tied to a chair by Vaas, who gives an unsettling exposition on insanity, before kicking Jason into a small water enclosure, ensuring he drowns by tying a cinder block to the chair. Escaping, Jason discovers the waters have been used for dozens of drownings, and kills several pirates. Eventually reaching a helicopter, Jason begins escaping, before being shot down by a rocket. Waking up outside the crash site, Vaas repeats his insanity lecture, before shooting Jason in the chest.

Skipping to an undisclosed amount of time later, Jason wakes up in a small house, having survived the gunshot due to the bullet hitting a lighter in his pocket. Dennis, a member of a group of natives on the island called Rakyat, gets Jason acclimated, and helps him prepare to rescue his friends.

(Plot Needed)

Staying low to get into the base, Jason and Sam reach Hoyt, and the two play a poker game, with the two preparing to attack and kill Hoyt at a set time. Halfway through the poker game, Hoyt stabs Sam, killing him. Revealing that he knows Jason's identity, he begins a deranged game of poker where every hand lost equals a finger cut off. Losing his hand immediately after, Hoyt cuts off one of Jason's fingers, causing him to revert into his own mind. After killing the guards in the room unconsciously, Jaosn fights Hoyt in room constructed by his mind, where he eventually kills Hoyt. Returning to Citra, Jason is betrayed by her, and is forcibly given hallucinogenic drugs, sending him on a drug fueled journey to reach Citra. Reaching her, Citra orders Jason to kill his friends, and he can ignore the order.

If Jason kills his friends, he and Citra have sex on an altar, where afterwards, she stabs him to death, as since she is now pregnant, Rakyat tradition states that the father must die.

If Jason defys the order, Dennis, in a rage, tries to kill him, but Citra blocks him, taking the blow, killing her. A regretful and almost catatonic Dennis begs her not to die, while Jason and his friends escape. Narrating as the group is implied to have escaped on a boat from the island. Jason feels he is a monster, but believe deep down, he is better than that.

Development

In August 2010, PC Gamer reported that development of Far Cry 3 was in "full swing" at Ubisoft Montreal.[12] In the same month, Game and Swedish retailer Webhallen listed the game for a 2010 release, which didn't happen.[13] In January 2011, Ubisoft declined to comment on speculation that Far Cry 3 would be hitting shelves in October after Game Informer listed the game as an October arrival in its 2011 preview feature.[14]

In February, the Official PlayStation Magazine suggested that the game was due for release at the end of 2011 as the following quote suggested, "Start taking the malaria medicine in preparation: Far Cry 3 could be arriving before the end of the year."[15] This statement was withdrawn in next month's edition where it was stated that the game would be shown on 2011's E3 and that the release date would be bumped back to 2012.[full citation needed] In May, the CVs of a couple of stuntmen listed Far Cry 3 as one of their previous projects.[16]

Far Cry 3 will feature a sandbox editor.[17]

Marketing

Players who pre-order Far Cry 3 will receive The Lost Expeditions Edition of the game. It contains two exclusive missions not available in the regular version. These missions, "The Forgotten Experiment" and "Ignition in the Deep", offer 40 minutes of additional playtime, plus a Type 10 Japanese World War 2 flare gun for use in the game's multiplayer modes.[18]

Players in America who pre-order Far Cry 3 from Gamestop will receive The Monkey Business bonus pack. It includes four more missions "hosted by Hurk and his bomb-carrying monkeys." and "two bonus ways to humiliate your friends" in multiplayer.[19]

Ubisoft commissioned Michael Lambert, a well-known Minecraft enthusiast, and artists Axel Janssen and Yohann Delcourt to create a custom map and texture pack mimicking Far Cry 3's setting and characters within the popular indie game Minecraft. The Far Cry 3 Minecraft mod was released on October 26, 2012 on the official Far Cry 3 website.[20]

Reception

Far Cry 3 has received positive reviews, with most praise centered on its detailed environment, memorable characters and narrative. IGN gave Far Cry 3 a 9.0 out of 10, praising the game's excellent cast of characters, unpredictable enemy encounters, and its open world environment.[32] Edge also added to the praise, calling the game "wild, reactive and unpredictable," giving Far Cry 3 an 8 out of 10.[33] Game Informer gave the game a score of 9.0 out of 10, praising the game's story, characters, open world exploration, and gameplay. GameTrailers gave the game an 8.6 out of 10, criticising the repetitive feel of the island, but praising the story, characters and its likeness to Assassin's Creed.[34] The game was highly praised by Eurogamer, who awarded it a 10 out of 10, claiming that 'Far Cry 3 is all the best things about open-world gaming.[35]

Paul Verhoeven at The Vine called the game "a big, belligerent, often times clumsy but ultimately gorgeous rumination on violence in all its forms." [36]
