Mimi Chakraborty is one of the most promising young female actor of this generation. She rose to fame by playing the role "Pupe", the female lead in mega serial Gaaner Oparey to perfection. Her tremendous performance made Pupe a timeless creation on television.[2]

Early Life

Mimi Chakraborty was born in Jalpaiguri a small town in North Bengal on 11th February[3]. Then went to Arunachal Pradesh with parents because of her father's job. After few years in Arunachal Pradesh, she shifted back to her ancestral home in Jalpaiguri[4] with her family. She did her plus 2 from Binnaguri St. James Convent. Then she came to Kolkata and completed her graduation in English from Ashutosh College[5] . She is the younger daughter of her parents.

Career

Mimi, before starting off her acting career, did modelling for few days. She participated in Femina Miss India, and was in Top 20 (east). A very funny and interesting trivia - Femina was her first ever ramp without any proper grooming, and at that time she did not have a penny 2 buy a ramp shoe,so had to borrow one. She also walked the ramp for Chandrani Pearls.

Her acting debut was with Champion[6], aired on Akash Bangla and she played the role "Diya" a young girl of todays generation. Diya was a very snoopy and modern girl, who falls in love with a guy named Aadi in her new neighborhood.

Her second project was a TV serial "Gaaner Oparey", produced by Ideas Creations, it was aired on Star Jalsha from 28 June, 2010 to 16 April,2011. Ideas Creations, the production house of Prosenjit Chatterjee together with Star Jalsha launched the mega-serial "Gaaner Opa rey" to pay tribute to Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore on his 150th birth anniversary. The likes of Rituparno Ghosh (who was initial scriptwriter of Gaaner Oparey), Debojyoti Mishra (Music Director), and other noted personalities from Film Industry were involved with the project.[7]

This was the turning point of Mimi's career and gave her all the limelight and accolades from different sections. She has received several awards for her wonderful portrayal of Pupe in the epic called "Gaaner Oparey".

Her debut Film "Bapi Bari Jaa" is ready and will be releasing in 7th December, 2012.

Gaaner Oparey

Gaaner Oparey , was the musical journey between two artists, bohemian Gora and traditional Pupe and their love and in the whole process reinventing Tagore's "music". The story revolved around a girl called Pupe from an orthodox Tagore-worshiping family and Gora, an extremely talented but care-free lad, who keeps on experimenting with Rabindra sangeet. This TV show marks the beginning of a-year-long celebration of 150th birth anniversary of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore.

GAANER OPAREY was for people who understand Rabindranath, his songs, his poems, his understanding of love and life. The show soon became favourite show of the educated and sophisticated bengalis accross the globe. It was path breaking and brought a new set of viewers back to TV and achieved "cult" status. The serial created a great awareness among the young generations about Tagore, his philosophy and music. Most importantly it revolutionized Rabindra sangeet, and made it popular among-st youth who earlier shunned away from Tagore songs thinking it to be out of fashion.

It was initially scripted by Rituparno Ghosh and later by Anuja Chattopadhyay and was directed by Joydeep Mukherjee. The music director was Debojyoti Mishra.

Gaaner Opaarey had outstanding cast , a blend of veteran actor and newcomers that included Mimi Chakraborty herself who did tremendous job and made all the characters immortal.

Mimi portrayed the role of Pupe(one of the most critical ,yet a beautiful characterization), a very talented singer, belonging to an orthodox Tagore worshiping family, who used to sing Rabindrasangeet in traditional form in concurrence with her family values. Pupe was considered to be the torch bearer of Sonar Tori's (name of the house she belonged to) tradition and culture. Her insecurities due to the absence of her father from childhood, made her more cocooned and she lead a very sheltered and dependent life. She was being taught from her very childhood days, to lead a life the Sonar Tori's way and individual thought process was not allowed to develop in her. Sonar Tori throttled Pupe's own sense of living. Pupe could never think independently what was 'right' or 'wrong' for her, neither had the power to judge and decide on her own. This brainwashed girl , after series of fights with Gora, and resistance from within , fell in love with him, an extremely talented carefree lad who dared to sing Rabindra sangeet in his own way causing a threat to big institutions like "Sonar Tori" who wanted to keep Rabindra sangeet for elite class only and did not allow any experimentation on Tagore songs, for their own benefits and power. But it was pre-decided by her family that she was going to get married to Prodipto, a sophisticated cultured man. After getting betrayed by her grandfather on "Maghotsav" (Mega Festival)day, Pupe finally revolts and after fighting all alone with the whole society, gets back her love, establishes herself as young independent girl of today's generation. Mimi was absolutely phenomenal in such a complicated role, which had various shades of timidity, indecisiveness, egoism, introvert nature at the same time had shades of simplicity, innocence, romanticism and in later stage, shades of anger, betrayal, agony, pain, suffering, then finally the great rebellion, retaliation and fighting back. Pupe grew from a timid introvert dependent girl to today's confident, strong independent personality and the journey was beautifully portrayed by Mimi. Mimi was exceptionally brilliant in all the emotions and made Pupe iconic.[8]

Bapi Bari Jaa (Debut Film)

Mimi's debut film is BAPI BARI JAA and she is the female lead, Dola .The film is being produced by Prosenjit Chatterjee's production house, Ideas Creations. Directed by Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha ,Story and Script by Padmanabha Dasgupta and music by Jeet Ganguly. The Film is also the silverscreen debut of Arjun Chakrabarty (better known as Gora, the male protagonist from Gaaner Opaarey) who is playing the role of Bapi, the male lead.[9]
