Nur Shahila binti Amir Amzah (born August 13, 1990) or popularly known by her commercial name Shila Amzah, is a Malaysian singer. The daughter of famous 1980s era Malaysian singer ND Lala, she was the runner-up of the second season of One in a Million in 2007[1][2][3] and the winner of Asia New Singer Competition in 2008. In 2012 she became the champion of the inaugural season of the Chinese television show Asian Wave.
Biography
On 20 September 2012, Amzah became the champion of Asian Wave, a Chinese "reality singing talent show" held in Shanghai.[4] The show is similar to The Voice. Amzah had the most online votes beating the other contestants. She sang three songs which is Jaclyn Victor's Gemilang, Bruno Mars' Grenade and Na Ying's Zheng Fu.[4] She also sang Wang Leehom's Forever Love and Adele's Set Fire to The Rain in one of the prelimilary rounds of Asian Wave.[5] The judges praised her performance.[4]
The Star reported on 27 September 2012 that she was chosen to be in the opening act for a series of concerts by Eric Moo, a Malaysian award-winning singer-composer, in Beijing starting 17 November.[6] Amzah said that she knows him because "he was one of the judges during the competition and his invitation is a huge honour for me."[6] She immediately agreed when he asked to be in his opening act.[6] The prize money of RM 5 million that she had in Asian Wave will be shared among her and the second and third place winners.[6]
Guang Ming Daily reported on 28 September 2012 that Amzah will be collaborating with Wang Leehom. Amzah's manager was planning to include all of the songs Amzah sung at the Asian Wave in an album soon.[5] The manager is also still discussing with Shanghai Media Team Entertainment Group, the media company behind Asian Wave on Amzah's singing contract.[5] She is making arrangements to improve her Chinese, a language that she learned from pre-school until Year Three.[5]
Amzah was listed as one of the leading nominees in the World's Best Female Artist together with Siti Nurhaliza & World's Best Entertainer of The Year categories beating other great nominees in World Music Awards 2012. This indicates that Amzah is now on par with Adele, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Madonna and a number of other big names. The awards ceremony, which recognizes artists on the album & track sales records around the world. For latest update, voting for Amzah can be made at the official website of World Music Awards. Amzah will also perform at the award stage later on invitation from the World Music Awards themselves. The awards ceremony were postponed from 22 December 2012 to Spring 2013, due to logistic and immigration issues.[7]
Amzah was nominated for the Shorty Awards in five categories. The categories are Best Reality Star in Social Media, Best in Social Media, Best Singer in Social Media, Best Celebrity in Social Media, and Best Music in Social Media. The ceremony will take place in New York on 8th April 2013.[citation needed]
