Synopsis

On a normal day, Homer is very late for work. As punishment, Mr. Burns makes Homer eat toxic waste in a dark room. Lenny and Carl come in and invite Homer to go bowling. Homer lies to Marge on the phone, telling her that he was not able to attend a tea party date with Maggie because there was a breakdown at the plant and Lenny was hospitalized. Homer goes bowling with Lenny and Carl. Homer bowls a 300 game, and makes the evening news. He earns the attention of Springfield. With this accomplishment, Homer becomes a celebrity in Springfield, appearing on "The Springfield Squares" (which has Ron Howard as a guest). However, he attempts a walk-on during a Penn & Teller special, but that backfires on him as Penn chases him off the stage with a crossbow (and leaving Teller descending slowly into a vat of sharks).

Homer's 15 minutes of fame wanes, and he becomes "yesterday's news". Worrying that his life has peaked, he attempts to commit suicide from a tall building, until Otto, who is bungee-jumping, saves him. Thankful for being alive, Homer searches for a more noble life, and dedicates his life to his children. He tries but fails to connect with Bart and Lisa so he decides to spend more time with Maggie. He tries to teach her how to swim, but she doesn't trust him and therefore, won't go in the water. When Homer takes Maggie to the beach, he nearly drowns, until Maggie pulls him to shore. For saving him, Homer treats Maggie to a game of bowling—and she bowls a 295 game. She actually bowled a perfect game, but Homer penalized her for going over the line.

Quotes

  • Homer: The coolant tank blew and they're taking Lenny to the hospital.
Marge: Oh no, not Lenny! Not Lenny!
Homer: Yes, I'm going to have to work late instead of seeing you and the kids, which is what I really want.
Marge: Okay, sure. (hangs up) Kids, turn off the TV. I have some bad news about Lenny.
    Bart and Lisa: Not Lenny!
  • Teller: Will you shut up!
Homer Simpson: Hey, I thought you never talked.
Teller: (nervous) Well, I didn't mean to...it slipped out. Oh God, now Penn's gonna beat me!
Penn: (laughs) Folks, it's all part of the act!
Teller: No it isn't! Don't leave me alone with him!
Penn: (to Homer) You've ruined the act! (aims crossbow at him) I'm gonna kill you!
Teller: He'll do it! I'm not the first Teller!
  • Chief Wiggum: Alright, smart guy. Where's the fire?
Homer (points to the police station, engulfed in flames) Over there.
Wiggum: Okay, you just bought yourself a 317: Pointing out police stupidity. Or is that a 314? No, no. A 314 is a dog in...or is that a 315? You're in trouble, pal.
  • Homer: (anxiously talking to Marge) Aww, I'm 26 hours late for work, no time for Maggie! Ooh, where's Waldo?! (Homer frantically searchs back of the box) Nope...Nope..This would be a lot easier without all these people! Nope. Nope. (Homer shouts) It's there! (pause) Nope.
    Marge: Homer!
Homer: Waldo, where are you!? (Waldo walks past the kitchen window)
  • Homer: No! I can't get in trouble if I can't see you!
