Blaze the Cat

Blaze the Cat is a fictitious character, a female cat who made her debut in the Nintendo DS video game, Sonic Rush.

Blaze is a 14-year-old princess from an alternate dimension; she is the defender of the Sol Emeralds. Her mission is to retrieve the Sol Emeralds and save her world from destruction.

History

Template:Spoiler

Blaze's dimension and Sonic's are in flux with each other, allowing the characters to travel from one to the other through a tear in the space-time continuum. Blaze is the only playable character in Sonic Rush aside from Sonic himself.

Throughout the game, she learns the meaning of friendship from Sonic & friends, especially Cream the Rabbit. Cream opens her up to the world and teaches her the value of friendship: the two become close partners like Sonic and Miles "Tails" Prower, similarly to how Tails values Sonic as an older brother and hero, Cream similarly learns to idolize Blaze, if not more in a friendly way.

It is through the power of friendship that she realizes the true powers of the Sol Emeralds, and transforms into her super form (Blaze's costume goes red, her wrists/gloves turn to flames and a fire force-field develops around her as a product of the Sol Emeralds rather than the lighter color and force field of Chaos energy usually used with the Chaos Emeralds) to help Super Sonic stop Dr. Eggman & Eggman Nega from taking over the universe. After the two defeat them, they promise to see each other again and say their goodbyes as they shake hands, being torn apart by their respectful dimensions being returned to normal. Blaze, still in super form, now understands her power, and friendship, as she thinks on Sonic's words of advice.

Personality

Although Blaze is shy when meeting strangers, she doesn't let her shyness prevent her from fulfilling her mission. At the end of a game, she is friendly and gentle. Blaze is normally calm, but when someone steals her emeralds, she will do whatever it takes to retrieve them. Blaze at the end is still in her version independent and trust worthy.

Abilities

  • Blaze has super speed, but it is likely she isn't as fast as Sonic or Shadow.
  • Blaze is a pyrokinetic.
  • Blaze has a super form.
  • Unlike other characters, Blaze turns into a tornado when jumping and doesn't keep speed or go faster.

Rumors

There is a rumor claiming Blaze's Super Form is named Phoenix Blaze. This is untrue, and it is probable the name originates from her fire powers as the legendary bird similarly possesses. According to the Japanese Official Guide, Blaze's super form is named Burning Blaze.

It's also rumored that Blaze and Sonic have feelings for each other, for in the final Doomsday scene Sonic says something to Blaze, which is edited out before he says that he will see her again.

It is unknown whether Blaze will appear again, however, based over what Sonic said to her, and what he whispered to a crying Cream afterwards, the game seems to hint at that, and this also seems to be backed up by the game's popularity with fans.

The following is fandom speculation; it is not based on any facts confirmed by Sega, or any of its subsidiaries.

What Sonic says to Blaze is edited out. However, after the two worlds split, we see Blaze flying still in her super form in the skies of her world, like with when characters speak, a Sonic dialogue appears, but Sonic looks like a hologram, he mentions that the reason the emeralds didn't cause any danger when the Eggman's had it is because they knew their power, and Sonic says that "as long as the person holding the emeralds knows how to control them nothing bad can happen, and Blaze... now you have that power, you understand what I mean right?"

That bit is her remembering what Sonic whispers, which the player doesn't see. When Sonic says "See ya Blaze" after Blaze remembers what Sonic whispered she then says "yes... again".

To summarize it: Sonic reveals to Blaze that now she can control the Sol Emeralds, she can visit anytime she wants without the world's merging.

Trivia

  • In the English version of Sonic Rush, Blaze is voiced by Bella Hudson.
  • People often mistakenly refer to Blaze as a queen; this is a false statement because she is still a princess.
  • Blaze is disliked by most Sonic/Amy supporters (or shippers), which is likely because Sonic seemed to be more friendly towards her than Amy.
  • Blaze is the only female character in all portrayals of Sonic the Hedgehog to have a Super Form.
  • While Sonic usually runs with fast paced, quick steps, Blaze seems to run with long strides. She also turns herself into a tornado when dashing, as opposed to Sonic's Spin Dash.
  • She appears in the Archie Comics adaption of Sonic Rush in issues 160-161.
