Candy Crush Saga is a popular game for smartphones and Facebook. It was developed by King.com. According to AppData,[1] as of March 2013, "Candy Crush Saga" surpassed FarmVille 2 as the most popular game on Facebook, with 45.6 million average monthly users.[2]

Gameplay

The game is a variation of the classic "match three" board videogames. Each level presents the player with a grid filled with candies, each one from one of six different colors (some levels may be restricted and not present candies of all colours). The objective is then to swap candies to align three consecutive candies of the same color and make them disappear, which causes candies above them to collapse into the space left by them, often causing chain reactions.

Special types of candy are created when the player performs actions that cause more than three candies to disappear:

  • Four candies in a row: creates a striped candy. The direction of the stripes is determined by the direction that the last candy was dragged when the candy was created. When this type of candy is destroyed, it emits a beam in the direction of its stripes, which hits all of the candies in its path.
  • Five candies in a row: creates a color bomb. This candy can be combinated with another candy from any color, causing all other candies from that same color to be destroyed.
  • Five candies in an "L" or "T" configuration: creates a wrapped candy. When destroyed, this candy explodes, damaging candies in all eight locations around it.

Additionally, combining special candies between them also produces special effects:

  • Two wrapped candies
  • Two striped candies
  • Two color bombs
  • Wrapped + striped candy
  • Color bomb + wrapped candy
  • Color bomb + striped candy

This game involves different levels, with many themes throughout the game. Each level in the game presents two objectives: firstly, the player must achieve a score that earns him at least one star; then there's an extra objective from a variety of types, including clearing jelly, making "ingredients" (cherries and chestnuts) reach the bottom of the screen, performing indicated candy combinations, or destroying a certain amount of candy of a given color. Occasionally, levels are added to the game 15 at a time, which comprise an episode of the game.

Popularity

The game has had over ten million downloads.[citation needed]

Candy Crush Saga is popular on Facebook having more than 20 million likes on the application page.

The game is briefly shown in Psy's music video Gentleman.[[1]]
