The Polytechnic University of the Philippines Laboratory High School (PUPLHS) is the laboratory school of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Education. It was established on 1955 as the Philippine College of Commerce Laboratory High School.

History

On 1955, the Philippine College of Commerce (PCC) established a laboratory high school for the students taking up Business Education. It was located at S.H. Loyola Street in Sampaloc, Manila. When PCC transferred to its new lot in Santa Mesa, Manila, the school followed suit.

Since the 1970s the school has been operating on its current compound located within the Mabini Campus of Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP). PUPLHS operates two provincial schools in Bataan and in Quezon (defunct).

Originally, there were only 8 teachers serving the school in 1955, although this number has grown as the school hires new recruits. Serving at the helm of the school was a succession of able and competent principals: Apolinaria Seva, Brigido Sadsad, Gloria Talastas, Angelina Manapat, Rosario Battung, Josefina Tan, Rosa Guirao, Fe Salting, Charito Montemayor, Liceria Lorenzo, Carmencita Castolo and the incumbent Corazon Tahil.

The trek to computerization began when Prof. Charito A. Montemayor initiated the computerized enrollment. Ably helping her was an alumnus of the LHS, Prof. Angelito Pastrana who was affiliated with PUPILS, and a group of IT specialists tasked to handle the computerization projects of PUP. Later, report cards were also computerized.

PUPLHS observed its golden anniversary with aplomb. The big event involving the alumni, faculty (including the retirees), and administrators. Students of PUPLHS are also participants of the world's largest human rainbow as PUP celebrated its centenary on 2004. The Alumni Association has been very helpful in funding many of the school’s projects, such as the construction of a Multi-Purpose Hall and the Mini Center for Livelihood and Entrepreneurial Development.

In 2012, the school revised its curriculum to align with the K-12 curriculum. Various revisions are made, thus dissolving some subjects and adding new ones. The Numeric Grading System is still used by the school.

Classes

Admissions

In order to be admitted to the Laboratory High School, a Grade 6 student must pass the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Laboratory High School Entrance Exam (PUPLHSEE). The top 150 students of the exam are guaranteed slots in the Grade 7 level. In case a student doesn't want to enter the school, students from the waiting list are called up to be enrolled in the LHS in order to complete the 150 slots allotted by the system. They are then sectioned into 3 sections with 50 students or more in each section through the results of the Physociogical Examination.[3]

Sections

The Laboratory High School has around 50 students in each class, with 3 classes per batch, in a total of about 150 students in each year level. The names of the sections in the Grade 9 and Grade 10 levels are in accordance to a theme based on the major subject offered in that particular year level.

The sections of PUPLHS are:

  • Grade 7 (PUP): Peace, Unity, and Prosperity
  • Grade 8 (LHS): Loyalty, Honesty, and Sincerity
  • Grade 9: Bookkeeping, Entrepenuership, and Office Technology
  • Grade 10: Bookkeeping, Entrepenuership, and Office Technology[4]

Students undergo through a commercial K-12 curriculum which emphasizes Business Administration. During their 7th and 8th Grade, students study Pre-Commerce subjects. Organizations

Students may join a variety of co-curricular organizations which pioneer the skills of the students. Student organizations organize school activities instead of faculty to hone their skills. Memberships in student organizations are very important to a student of PUPLHS. A grading scheme has been continuously used as a way to determine the honor awardees.
