Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies, known in Japan as Gyakuten Saiban 5 (逆転裁判 5, lit. "Turnabout Trial 5"),[3] is an upcoming adventure video game published and developed by Capcom for the Nintendo 3DS. It is the seventh total game in the Ace Attorney series (not counting cross-overs) and the fifth installment of the main lineage. It will be the first in the series to be released on the Nintendo 3DS. The game will see Phoenix Wright return as the main protagonist and will take place a year after Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. The game is slated for released in Japan on July 25, 2013, and as a digital-only release in North America and Europe in Fall 2013.[4][3]

Plot

Template:Ace Attorney chronology

Dual Destinies marks the return of Phoenix Wright as the main protagonist of the series since the original trilogy. The game takes place one year after Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, the events of which cleared Wright's name of the circumstances behind his disbarment and allowed him to practice law again. He will be accompanied by a new assistant, a rookie defense attorney and psychologist named Athena Cykes. The first case in the game will see Wright go up against Gaspen Payne, the younger brother of recurring series character Winston Payne, as he defends a high school student who is charged for causing an explosion at the courthouse.[5] Apollo Justice from the previous Ace Attorney game will also appear as a playable character.[4][6] The new rival prosecutor of the game is named Jin Yūgami (夕神 迅, Yūgami Jin), who was ordered to stand in court despite currently serving a murder sentence.[4] Miles Edgeworth and Trucy Wright also make returning appearances,[7] with Edgeworth acting as a prosecutor in court.[8]

Gameplay

The game looks to continue the style of gameplay from previous installments, in which the player must utilize evidence and find contradictions in witness statements to prove their client innocent. Like previous games, gameplay is split up between Investigations, in which players find evidence and question witnesses, and Trials, where they must use the evidence to expose contradictions. Areas during Investigations are now presented in 3D, allowing players to change their view and zoom in on areas to find clues.[9] A new system, called the Mood Matrix, gives the player the ability to gauge the emotions of a witness, such as tones of anger when mentioning certain topics.[10][11] If the player notices a contradictory emotional response during testimony, they can point out the discrepancy and press the witness for more information.[12] Another new feature is a backlog function, which allows players to review previous dialogue in case they missed anything.[13] The title now features full 3D graphics and character models, allowing more dynamic camera angles during gameplay.[11] The game will also feature downloadable costumes via DLC.

Development

In May 2007, a month after the release of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, Capcom officially announced that a fifth game in the Ace Attorney series was being produced.[14] Following this, no further announcements were made about Gyakuten Saiban 5; in 2008, they would announce another game in the series, tentatively entitled "NEW Gyakuten NOT Saiban." This was later revealed to be Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, a game featuring Phoenix's primary rival. Two more games in the series, Gyakuten Kenji 2 and Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, were announced before Gyakuten Saiban 5 was mentioned again.

In January 2012, almost five years after the game's original announcement, Capcom revealed a logo for the game at the end of a celebration of the series' tenth anniversary. It was then revealed in September, in the magazine Famitsu, that the game would be released on the Nintendo 3DS with further details being released, including a playable demo, at the Tokyo Game Show 2012.[5] The game will be the second game to feature Phoenix Wright with 3D graphics following the crossover game, Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, and will not see full involvement from series creator, Shu Takumi, who is busy with Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney.[5] The game will also feature animated cutscenes produced by Bones.[15]

Capcom has announced that the game will also be released in North America and Europe,[3] which they had planned since about two years before the game was featured in Famitsu.[16] The game will be available exclusively as a digital download in North America and Europe via the Nintendo eShop. Capcom USA Senior Vice-President, Christian Svensson, stated that the sales forecasts for Dual Destinies are high compared to how well the franchise has performed commercially in the past, which was necessary in order to get it released in the West.[17]

Dual Destinies will not reuse the voice clips from previous games in the series, since the Nintendo 3DS system supports higher quality sound than the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS.[18] For the new voice clips, Capcom has hired professional voice actors, while some smaller roles may be voiced by Capcom staff, as opposed to previous games where all the voice acting was provided by Capcom staff.[18]

Release

Dual Destinies is scheduled for release in Japan on July 25, 2013,[4] and in Fall of 2013 in North America and Europe. The American and European releases will be available only on the Nintendo eShop, and a physical version of the game is not planned for those territories. [19] Capcom USA Senior Vice President Christian Svensson states this is due to a lack of retail support for previous iterations.[20]

Free downloadable costumes for Phoenix Wright, Athena Cykes, and Apollo Justice will be available in Japan upon the game's release until August 15, 2013.[4][21] A limited edition version of Dual Destinies will also be released in Japan, which will include a Phoenix Wright figurine, a Phoenix Wright-style Nintendo 3DS pouch, and stickers.[22]
