Max von Zedtwitz (born in Switzerland) is a global innovation scholar, founder of GLORAD[1] and professor at various universities in Europe and China.

Professional Background

Max von Zedtwitz obtained a M.Sc. in Computer Science from ETH-Zurich, and a MBA in Technology Management and a Ph.D. in Management from the University of St. Gallen. He worked in nucleonics research at ATR-International in Japan, software development at Siemens-Stromberg-Carlsson in Florida, USA and as a postdoctoral visiting fellow at Harvard University. SUbsequently, he was professor of technology management at IMD, professor of innovation management at Tsinghua University, professor of strategy at Peking University, and professor of management at Tongji University[2], Grenoble school of management, Nyenrode Business University, University of St. Gallen,[3], and Chalmers University of Technology. He also was managing director of AsiaCompete Ltd and Vice President of PRTM Management Consultants, based in China. He currently is managing director of GLORAD, a research center and think-tank for global R&D management and reverse innovation.

Scientific Contributions

His most significant contributions are at the intersection of international business, innovation, and R&D Management. With collaborator Oliver Gassmann, he pioneered a behavioral model of organizational evolution of global R&D organization. This model contends that firms follow a limited number of strategic paths when internationalizing R&D activities, requiring internal actors (business units and R&D centers) to behave, collaborate and communicate in ways commensurate with the complexity and maturity of the global R&D organization. Later, he and Gassmann also formulated a supply-and-demand model for innovation globalization, which suggests that global R&D organization is strongly influenced by two principal external drivers, namely access to markets and access to technology. In managerial writings, he outlined support mechanisms appropriate to lead global innovation teams within such R&D organizations. More recently, von Zedtwitz focuses on reverse innovation and innovation in emerging countries, especially China. He also contributed to the theory of global R&D flows, pharmaceutical innovation, and incubator management.

Scholarly Works

Von Zedtwitz has published ten books and more than sixty articles in journals such as the Research Policy, the Journal of International Management, Technovation, and R&D Management. He is an Editor, Editorial Board Member, or Editorial Advisor to journals such as Technology Analysis and Strategic Management,[4] the Journal of International Management,[5] Creativity and Innovation Management,[6] Thunderbird International Business Review,[7] Technovation,[8] International Journal of Technology Management,[9] International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management,[10] Global Strategy Journal[11] and R&D Management.[12] He is also the 2009 Recipient of the IAMOT Award for Research Excellence, to recognize the top-50 researchers publishing in the highest percentile of SCI/SSCI-index Technology and Innovation Management journals.
