The Santiago de Compostela derailment occurred on July 24, 2013 when an Alvia train en route to Santiago de Compostela from Madrid derailed before reaching the station. At least 35 people killed and another 50 were injured.[1]
Accident
At 20:41 CEST (18:41 UTC),[2][3] a passenger train from Madrid to Ferrol derailed at Santiago de Compostela, killing at least 35 people,[4] and injuring 50 more. Four carriages were reported to have derailed.[5][6] The train was carrying 218 passengers.[2][6] Witnesses claim the train was driving at high speed before derailing, with one carriage jumping out of the track. [3][6][4] One of the carriages caught fire following the accident.[6]
