Pretty Yende
Opera
Pretty Yende, OIS (born 6 March 1985)[1] is a South African[2] soprano opera singer, from Piet Retief, Mpumalanga.[3]
Early life and education

She graduated cum laude from the South African College of Music[4] – a part of the University of Cape Town, located in the Rondebosch suburb of Cape Town, Western Cape. Yende also graduated from the Accademia Teatro alla Scala, in Milan, Italy.[4]
Career
She won first prize at the Vincenzo Bellini International Competition in 2010. In 2011, Yende won first prize at Operalia, The World Opera Competition, held that year in Moscow, Russia.[5]
In 2012, she sang the role of Musetta in Giacomo Puccini's 1896 opera La bohème at La Scala in Milan.[6] Yende made her Metropolitan Opera debut in New York City, New York, on 17 January 2013,[7] in the role of Adèle in Gioachino Rossini's 1828 opera Le comte Ory.[3]
Awards and honours
Yende was conferred the silver Order of Ikhamanga on 27 April 2013. In a statement by the Chairperson of the National Orders Advisory Council, Dr. Cassius Lubisi, Yende was conferred the honour "For her excellent achievement and international acclaim in the field of world opera and serving as a role model to aspiring young musicians."
