contradiction in terms

"Edward was the only son of Thomas of Brotherton, eldest son of Edward I by his second marriage to Margaret (1279?–1318), the daughter of Philippe III of France (d.1285).[1] His mother was Alice Hales (d. in or before 1330)," NOW if his father had a second wife Margaret who was Edward's mother, then Edward's mother CANNOT be named Alice.
