Black Friday is the second mixtape by American hip hop recording artist Lil' Kim, released on February 14, 2011 through PayPal.[1] The title track is a response to Nicki Minaj's song "Roman's Revenge".[2] The mixtape also contains the track "Grindin’ Makin’ Money," a collaboration which features rapper Birdman and Nicki Minaj, which Kim claims ignited the feud between her and Minaj,[3] as well as another diss song towards Minaj titled "Pissin' on 'em".[4] Kim claimed she sold sold 113,000 copies in 28 hours, making her the all-time #1 seller on PayPal, but the number of sales has not been confirmed.[5]

Background

Black Friday is a mixtape by Lil' Kim. The cover, featuring a decapitated Nicki Minaj, was a fan's idea.[6] The mixtape's title/title track is a play on Minaj's debut album Pink Friday as well as being a reference to Friday the 13th, also known as Black Friday, as heard in the lyric "...im turning Pink Friday to Friday the 13th". The title track was a response to Minaj after her song "Roman's Revenge" was released to be a diss track towards Kim. Kim had claimed Minaj was imitating her, stating in the title track that she is a "Lil' Kim wannabe" and "Lil' Kim clone clown". The music video was released on Presidents Day 2011.[7] Lil' Kim went to Hot 97 on February 14, 2011 and talked about Diddy and Nicki Minaj, and how she felt disrespected by Keyshia Cole and Voletta Wallace, and how The Notorious B.I.G.'s legacy was disrespected as well as info regarding other topics related towards her second mixtape Black Friday. Furthermore Lil' Kim has stated that Nicki Minaj had been "swagger jacking" her. The mixtape was sold on PayPal for $9.99.

Critical reception

Black Friday received negative reviews from music critics. Kid Fury of Vibe described its content as "tragic shit" and commented that the mixtape "lacks consistency, edge, and originality".[8] Slant Magazine's Huw Jones gave it one-and-a-half out of five stars and felt that its production lacks "originality". Jones also panned Lil Kim's lyrics and disses towards Minaj as "inane", writing that "there are some pert jabs dotted among the tactless insults, but for the most part, it's a senseless rant".[9] Kazeem Famuyide of The Source wrote that "I know it's a dated name ... but I don't think it’s that crazy as far as appealing to her hardcore fan base". Jozen Cummings of XXL wrote facetiously, "It's not that we refuse to pay for music, we'd just much rather have an option to not do it. If you force any price tag on us without giving us a decent amount of free music to sample from, we're scoffing at that $9.99".[10]
