Fallout 4 is a rumoured upcoming post-apocalyptic action role-playing video game set in an open world environment being developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. [1]

Plot

Setting

Not much is known about the setting of Fallout 4 so far. Bethesda Softworks's senior producer, Jason Bergman, was asked during an interview to give hints as to the setting of the next Fallout game, he replied with (translated from Norwegian), "You'll get no tips from me. But the Mojave Wasteland was a fun place to explore, wasn't it?" [2] From what I was told, Fallout 4 will take place in New York City.

Development

In 2004, Bethesda Softworks acquired the rights from Interplay Entertainment to create and publish three Fallout games (Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 4{{}}). [3] Later, in 2007, Bethesda purchased the entire franchise, and Interplay licensed back from Bethesda the rights to a Fallout MMORPG which later resulted in a legal dispute, with Bethesda Softworks and its in-house development studio retaining the rights to all of the Fallout franchise, including an MMO.

In 2008, the vice president of Bethesda Softworks, Pete Hines said: "The whole reason we went out and acquired the license and that we now own Fallout is that we clearly intended to make more than one." He also added: "This is not something we're going to do once and then go away and never do it again. When that will be or how long that will be God only knows, but we acquired it specifically because we wanted to own it and develop it and work on it like we do with The Elder Scrolls." [4]

On 8th January 2013, Fallout 3 voice actor Erik Dellums hinted via Twitter that his character, Three Dog, would be returning. On his Twitter account, he stated, "To all my #Fallout3 and #ThreeDog fans: There may be more of the Dog coming! Fingers crossed!". [5] In a follow-up tweet, he stated, "I was given permission to release that tease."[6] This was widely interpreted by the gaming media as a sign that a Fallout 4 announcement is imminent. However, in July of the same year, Dellums tweeted that the game he is working on is not being produced by Bethesda Softworks, therefore it was not the anticipated new Fallout title.[7]

On 12th July 2013, JohnTheRenegade published an article on IGN saying "First things first, I know that Fallout 4 is currently in active development at Bethesda." [8]

In an interview at Games-con, one of the Bethesda game studios representatives said that, "of course there is new idea's and games being developed". When asked if there was going to be another Fallout game, he said, "Like we have said before, we attained the franchise for a reason, we intend to make more." It has been confirmed that Bethesda Game studios have had a new game in development since 2011.
