Sofia Hayat (born December 6, 1974)[1][2] is a Pakistani British actress, model and singer who worked on both British and Indian projects.[3] Hayat first came to public attention on Satellite Channel, Zee TV, where she hosted her own TV show for 3 years starting in 2000. She holds a BA (Hons) in Music and Performing Arts, and has studied acting for 7 years in total, including the Meisner Technique, which she is a huge fan.[4] In July 2012, Hayat was named the new "Curvy Icon" by Vogue Italia.[5] In September 2013, FHM listed Hayat as the 81st sexiest woman in the world.[6]

Early life

Hayat was born into a religious Muslim family in Gravesend, Kent, UK to Pakistani parents, where her father, Zammurrad works in a factory and mother Suraiya is a house wife. She has four siblings, three sisters Zarqa, Saira and Tahira and two brothers Majid and Wajid. In an Interview published in Daily Mail, she revealed that she was a religious Muslim, offering prayer five times a day. I don't blame my parents for what they have put me through, I blame the fact that Islam has become so distorted. I believe that Islam literally means Peace. The greeting from one Muslim to another "As-salamu alaykum" means "Peace with you". If only people read the Quran for himself, he would see the love and peace and equality among men and women it promotes.[7]

In 2010, after studying two religions Islam and Christianity, she converted to Catholic.[8]

Career

Hayat started acting professionally at 16, where she landed her first role with the BBC on the show Absolute Power. She has appeared in TV advertising campaigns for international brands including Walkers Crisps, McDonald's, and Timotei hair shampoo. She starred in Fur TV, where she played a Latino with a Brazilian accent. Hayat also hosted and judged a show for UTV Bindaas' reality TV show Superdude Season 2. Hayat has completed feature films The Unforgettable, Cash and Curry where she plays the gun-toting wife of a gangster, and Exitz. The Unforgettable premiered at The Venice Film Festival in 2008 In May 2013, Hayat starred in the BBC adaption of "Bollywood Carmen". She later appeared in BBC's "Waterloo Road", and "Jonathan Creek", as well as playing "Lucia", in the BAFTA award winning series, "Fur Tv". Hayat published a book called, "Dishonoured", which was published by Blakes Publishing in October 2009, since translated into 3 different languages. She is also a keen supporter of the charity Ashiana whom she regularly speaks for, raise money, and help to raise awareness for them. Hayat made her Bollywood debut playing a leading role in the film Diary of a Butterfly, which was released in April 2011.[9]

Music career

Hayat was asked to write the official song for the victims and survivors of the Pakistani and Indian earthquake. The appeal concert was at The Royal Albert Hall in London.[citation needed] In 2006, Hayat was in a band that released a song on MTV Base. The song reached #6 in the charts, with all proceeds going to "Mothers Against Guns". Hayat worked with artist Jesse J on this project. Hayat also entertained UN troops in 2008. In 2010, Hayat set up her own record label, Hayat Music, and released her debut single, "What's The Matter".

In 2012, Sofia performed at Mahalakmi racecourse for the final polo matches. In 2013 she performed at the Porsche polo cup at Mahalakmi race course. Hayat has been confirmed as the Patron of PAWS Mumbai, with Pooja Bhatt, where she has rescued a number of animals including, owls, turtles and birds of prey. She has also posed for a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals campaign, encouraging consumers to buy cosmetics that are not tested on animals.[10]
