Love Story is the upcoming second studio album by American rapper Yelawolf, scheduled to be released in 2014, by Slumerican, Shady Records and Interscope Records. The album was described by Yelawolf as a more passionate album than his debut album. The album's recording process took place primarily in Nashville, Tennessee from 2012 to January 2014. Record production was handled by Eminem, Malay, WillPower and DJ Paul, among others. It was supported by the single "Box Chevy V".

Background

In April 2012, Yelawolf said, "The focus of the album is the experience since Radioactive and just putting all that into a project."[1] In December 2012, Yelawolf addressed the status of all of his upcoming projects in an interview.[2] He also spoke about Love Story, and how it would be different compared to his debut effort Radioactive. He said, "With Radioactive, I gave up a lot of creative space, and like I predicted would happen, there were some records that didn't translate to my audience."[3] Yelawolf also said this album contains more straight up passion in the songs and there is no guidelines for the album.[4] He also said, "I’m telling the truth about a lot of things. This album is in line with it having a concept and a theme. This is what makes my music special and makes me want to keep making music. I try to be as honest as I can with everything I do."[5]

Recording and production

On March 20, 2012, Yelawolf announced he would start recording his second album under Shady Records in June 2012, and it would be titled Love Story.[6][7] Due to a stage diving incident which caused a ruptured spleen, Yelawolf had to delay the album's recording process.[5][8][9] However, he said this turned into a good situation, as it gave him more time to record the album, since his previous album had been rushed, the entirety of it being recorded in two weeks.[9][10] In an April 2012 interview with Inked, Yelawolf confirmed that WillPower and Malay would provide production on the album. He also remained quiet on who would be featured on the album.[1] In December 2012, he stated he would be recording the album in Nashville, Tennessee and go to Detroit, Michigan so he and Eminem could finish the album.[3] When speaking of the album's recording process, Yelawolf said, he stayed away from "the media and buckled down in his studio in Nashville, to get it done. He promises something special for music lovers. For this album, he really wanted get back to his own work and not try and please anyone."[11]

Following the release of Trunk Muzik Returns in March 2013, Yelawolf begun working significantly on Love Story. During the following five months, he recorded music for the album in Nashville and brought both Eminem and Slaughterhouse there to work on it.[12] During an April 2013 interview with The Source, frequent producer WillPower confirmed that he had been working a lot with Yelawolf on the album. He said, "We’ve regrouped and we’ve certainly matured and grown in what we’re doing. For music lovers it’s going to be an interesting and fulfilling project."[13] On January 3, 2014, Yelawolf confirmed that he was almost finished with the album and expected to have it completed by the end of the month.[14] The album was revealed to have been just completed on January 28, 2014.[15]

Release and promotion

Following the release of his debut studio album, Radioactive, Yelawolf toured with Lil Wayne and Travis Barker on the I Am Music Tour. He then begun frequently collaborating with Barker, who he released a collaboration EP with, named Psycho White on November 13, 2012.[16] During 2012 he also released the mixtapes, Heart of Dixie and The Slumdon Bridge with Ed Sheeran.[11][17] Then on March 14, 2013, he released his sixth official mixtape Trunk Muzik Returns. The mixtape contained ten original tracks and features guest appearances from Raekwon, Paul Wall, Killer Mike and ASAP Rocky. The mixtape was also entirely produced by his go-to producer WillPower for SupaHotBeats.[18]

On October 31, 2013, Yelawolf released Black Fall, another mixtape, this time produced entirely by Three 6 Mafia's DJ Paul.[19] From November 14 through November 23, 2013, Yelawolf toured with Funk Volume artist Hopsin in promotion of Love Story, on the Fuck It Tour. The tour consisted of primary small, intimate venues in the West Coast of the United States.[5][20]

At first the album was set to be released during 2012, however that would be pushed to 2013 due to time constraints.[9] Then in November 2013, Yelaowlf confirmed to XXL that the album would now be released during 2014.[21] In a January 28, 2014 interview with Sway Calloway, Yelawolf revealed that the album was scheduled for a May 2014 release.[15] A release date was later revealed as May 20, 2014.[22]

Singles

On January 3, 2014, Yelawolf announced that the album's first single would be the fifth installment in the Box Chevy series, "Box Chevy V".[14] "Box Chevy V" would be released on January 27, 2014, and the following day it would be made available for digital download.[23][24][25] The song has a mellow groove, the WillPower made production features twinkling keys and guitar licks.[26][27] The music video, filmed in Granville, Tennessee, was released on April 4, 2014.[28][29]
