Original Sin is a 2014 comic book storyline in Marvel Comics. The story features Nick Fury and the Avengers investigating the murder of Uatu the Watcher only to suffer trauma from what they see in his eye. They also deal with conflict from a group of misled self-appointed investigators led by Black Panther and Punisher.

Publication history

Writer Jason Aaron and Mike Deodato conceived the "Original Sin" storyine that will detail different heroes working together in different investigations to find out who murdered Uatu the Watcher.[1]

Plot

Sam Alexander begins to reflect on his superhero career. Sam goes for another day of training with Uatu the Watcher at the Watcher's moon base. Stumbling around the place, he ends up finding Uatu's weapons storage. Sam asks about some of them and Uatu gives him the origin story of the Watchers. He even shows Sam what he watches in the Multiverse all of it using his Nova helmet. Sam also learns that Uatu's father was the Watcher who originally gave nuclear technology to the Prosilicans with Uatu's search of parallel universes being motivated by the desire to find the one world where his father's act of charity was proved to be the right thing to do. Then Uatu reveals something else; Jesse Alexander is alive. Sam promptly flies out of there happy as a lark.[2]

On the Moon, Uatu the Watcher continues to watch from his base on the Blue Area of the Moon. He realizes something big is going to happen to him. While he is scared, Uatu the Watcher confronts it head on meeting his soon-to-be-killer and telling him "I see you." With that, his base explodes. On Earth, Captain America, Wolverine, Black Widow, and Nick Fury talk over different steaks they've had, with Wolverine ribbing Captain America over his figure and Black Widow declaring that bear steaks are the best. However, the more jovial tone is pulled out as a panicked Thor calls them. Captain America asks Nick Fury to join him. Even though Nick Fury declares himself retired, Captain America insists he come along anyway. Reaching the Moon, they find Thor who explains what he saw before finally discovering Uatu the Watcher's dead body. They realize the killer was a professional and that they took a lot of the gear he had. Again, Captain America asks Nick Fury to help them. Despite Nick Fury warning them that Uatu the Watcher's murderer may be a hero, Captain America just wants the truth. In The Necropolis, Black Panther is confronted by a mysterious man who gives him various data about possible leads. While the man knows that Black Panther can't investigate them all, he reveals three teams he's gathered to investigate those leads. Emma Frost and Scott Lang go with Black Panther to the center of the Earth, Moon Knight, Winter Soldier, and Gamora head into deep space while Doctor Strange and Punisher investigate elsewhere. On the Moon, Nick Fury gives his report to someone when Captain America walks in. Nick Fury is reassured that no one knows he's around as Captain America gives him pieces of what may be a bullet. However, things get worse when there's a call from the Fantastic Four: a Mindless One is wrecking New York and smacking the Thing around. Spider-Man shows up to give Thing a hand. Spider-Man recognizes the Mindless and realizes that they're not supposed to be telepathic. The Mindless One screams in agony over the things he's seen and the things he's done. Thing realizes he's welding the Ultimate Nullifier and tries to talk the Mindless One down. However, it doesn't work and the Mindless shoots himself with it. By this time, Nick Fury and the Avengers arrive. Captain America wants the Ultimate Nullifier left alone until it is contained and Fury declares the battle zone a murder scene. Elsewhere, a group of villains realize the other Mindless Ones are evolving and they are too. However, one of them notes this, but doesn't care - he wants to know what's inside the Eye of the Watcher...[3]
