The Maastricht School of Management (MsM) is one of the oldest and most international management schools in the Netherlands. It provides internationally accredited Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degrees, Master degrees programs and Executive Education. It also provides research and consultancy services.

History and Foundations

The Maastricht School of Management (MsM) was established in 1952 in Delft, The Netherlands, as the Research Institute for Management Science (RVB) at the Technical University of Delft 1952. In 1989 RVB relocated to Maastricht. Its name was changed to Maastricht School of Management in 1993.

Its first MBA program was offered in 1983 (in The Netherlands), and a DBA program was introduced in 1995. Since the late 1990s Maastricht School of Management’s programs are increasingly offered across the globe, particularly in emerging markets and developing countries, in collaboration with selected partner institutions.^[1] Thus in addition to The Netherlands Maastricht School of Management’s educational programs are currently offered on location in around 18 different countries where a European degree is considered more valuable than a domestic one: China, Egypt, Germany, Ghana, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Peru, Romania, Rwanda, Suriname, Vietnam and Yemen.

In September 2012, Maastricht School of Management celebrated its 60th Anniversary.^[2] It was attended by a large number of effete dignitaries and representatives of business, including Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima of the Netherlands, the Governor of the Province of Limburg, the Major of the City of Maastricht, the Rector Magnificus of the University of Maastricht, the Vice-President of Google and Ambassadors from Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Nigeria, Vietnam, Taiwan and other small countries.

Education Programs and Student Body

MsM offers internationally accredited programs – in close collaboration with partner institutions in a growing number of countries across the world. Core programs are the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Executive MBA (EMBA), and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). Furthermore the School offers Master of Science (MSc), Master of Management in Education, as well as a wide range of certificate and diploma based executive programs, including tailor-made programs.

More than 700 participants from over 42 different countries graduated during 2011 from MsM’s degree programs. MsM’s annual graduation ceremony takes place in Maastricht, The Netherlands, (usually in September). Degree ceremonies are also held across the world at MsM’s partner institutions.

Accreditations and rankings

The Maastricht School of Management’s degree programs have been accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA). The School is accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools (ACBSP), but not by EQUIS. Additionally the MBA program conducted in Maastricht is accredited by the Dutch Flemish Accreditation Organization (NVAO). The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science endorses the academic standards of Maastricht School of Management’s MBA degree. The MBA program complies with the standards upheld by the Higher Education Quality Control Organization of the Netherlands.

MSM calims to hold the first position in the Top Business Schools, 4 palmes category, ranking of Eduniversal. Not only in the ranking of Netherlands Business Schools, but in the worldwide ranking as well.^[3]

Maastricht School of Management is also recognized by the Chinese government.^[4] MsM is one of the most prominent European providers of management education in China, through its partnership with Nanjing University Business School, ranked amongst the top 5 business schools in China.

Research^[5]

Maastricht School of Management is a research-driven management school. Its research program is built around its Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program, and focuses on critical global issues that demand greater inputs from managers and entrepreneurs, such as (i) food and water in sustainable development and (ii) business, innovation and governance in developing countries. In this respect, MsM functions as a think-tank management school. Its research is focused on these global issues through three expertise clusters, namely in (i) entrepreneurship and innovation, (ii) global value chains and partnerships and (iii) organizational development performance and public policy. MsM’s research is published in its own Working Paper Series,^[6] and in journals and books. In recent years its Faculty has published in several ISI category journals and with academic publishers such as Oxford University Press, Palgrave MacMillan and Routledge, amongst others. While research at MSM is excellent, the quality of research in DBA programmes in partner schools worldwide is questionable.

Projects & Consultancies^[7]

Maastricht School of Management has a portfolio of international capacity development projects, both for the public and private sector. The school collaborates with international development agencies and donor organizations.

MsM offers institutional capacity strengthening through educational and advisory interventions in a variety of fields such as higher education, public administration, entrepreneurship, private sector development, labor market, international trade, water and environmental management, sustainable tourism development, agribusiness development and gender.

Location

Maastricht School of Management is located in Maastricht, one of the oldest cities in The Netherlands, with a history stretching back 20 centuries. Its central European location (close to Aachen, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Brussels, Cologne, Frankfurt, London and Paris) facilitates its role as a management school.

Within Maastricht MsM is located in the business district Maastricht-Randwyck, next to the Maastricht Exposition and Congress Center (MECC) and the Academic Hospital Maastricht (azM).

The train station Maastricht-Randwyck is 80 meters from the school. There are regular trains to the Maastricht Central Station as well as to Brussels and Paris.

Maastricht Aachen Airport is situated at ten kilometers from MsM. Additionally, three international airports are located within one hour’s drive: Brussels, Cologne and Düsseldorf.
