Dr. Catherine Black meets with her psychiatrist, Dr. Helen Hartramph in which she tells the doctor that she went off her meds and had plans to commit suicide. Her boyfriend Will Renseller had proposed marriage to her, and didn't give him an answer because he doesn't know about her bipolar disorder.

Catherine works at the Neuroscience Research and Treatment Center, "The Cube". She meets a patient name Anthony, who a few months ago just showed systems as a schizophrenia. She meets the new chief of neurosurgeon, Dr. Ian Bickman who has a known reputation of being with many women.

Catherine accepts Will's proposal when she tells him her secret but goes off her meds when he shows her a house they can potentially live in as a family. She tells Will, she doesn't want any children but says they can make it work. While still off her meds, she catches Ian taking modafinl, which makes him focus and while this happens she makes out with him. She meets with Will and make passionate love. That night right before she leaves, she throws him the engagement ring.

They find out that Anthony has a brain tumor. Ian operates on him and he is back to normal. Anthony tells Catherine he doesn't want to be a physicist anymore and that neuroscience is something is leaning towards too.

Catherine visits her brother Josh, his wife Regan, and their daughter Esme. She cares about Esme very dearly and asks her to be her maid of honor. Seen as a flashback, her mother killed herself by drowning in the ocean. When Catherine is on her meds again, she went to go see Esme, but Regan told that she needs to take a break from them. We find out that Esme is Catherine's biological daughter.

Catherine goes to the beach similar to where her mom died. She calls Helen and tell her to give her reason to go living. Helen says that her work is the reason to keep on living. Will meets with Catherine, and he says that he will stay and be with her because he likes who Catherine is when she is off her meds.
