U.S. Ground Forces
In the summer of 2014, U.S forces raided a stash house where ISIS was holding American hostages. 14 ISIS fighters were killed, a U.S soldier was wounded, but the hostages weren't there. The mission failed, and James Foley was executed by Jihadi John in August.
September 2013 Syrian Redline Crisis
In 2013, after an alleged chemical attack by the Assad Regime on its own people, U.S president Barack Obama announced that Syria had crossed a "redline" and that punitive Airstrikes on Syrian weapons compounds would follow. This announcement proved to be very controversial in the United States. After a last minute deal brokered by Russia's Putin, the Obama Administration decided not to follow through on his threats to attack Syria. Bashar al-Assad agreed to destroy most of his weapons of mass destruction.
U.S. Reconnaissance missions
Announced in August of 2014, American warplanes had begun reconnaissance overflights of Syrian territory. These will determine whether airstrikes should be used in Syria.
