Celia S. Friedman (born January 12, 1957) is a writer of science fiction and fantasy.

Friedman writes epic science fiction and fantasy novels which include complex interweavings of plot and detailed setting. Many of her novels indirectly address the concept of vampirism. They also explore the protagonist's psychological trappings and inner conflicts, moving from a chaotic beginning to a self-accepting whole.

Though her books often center on traditional fantasy themes like magic, vampires, and telepathy, Friedman claims that all her books are strictly science-fiction, and that she is careful to include a plausible hard-science explanation for all that occurs in each book. She's also suspicious of fantasy's traditional clearly-delineated good and evil roles -- her books deal mainly in the grey zone between the two.

While writing The Wilding, Friedman said that she had never planned on writing a sequel, and that it was very strange for her to do so for In Conquest Born. As the latter was her first major published novel, she felt it strange to create a new story using a twenty-year old universe.
