Johnsburg High School is a public High School in Johnsburg, Illinois; a town located in northeast McHenry County. Its mascot is the Skyhawk.

Community

The community experienced a rapid growth, and the high school had 907 students for the 2009-2010 academic school year.[7] The district then experienced rapid decline in enrollment, leaving the school with about 700 students for the 2013-2014 school year. Enrollment is projected to further decrease after a rapid period of decline, however upgrades to the aging school facilities in the near future may attract families from other surrounding communities as property values may increase.

Courses of study

There is a narrowing variety of courses students can take at JHS. There are currently 9 AP courses.[8]

The school also offers vocational classes including welding, heavy diesel, and machine tool technology. Students who complete the heavy diesel class may also earn a commercial driver's license.[9]

Student body

Music

The school offers both a choral program and a band program. There are three choral groups including Concert Choir, Treble Choir, and Varsity Choir. Concert Choir is open to any student, while Treble choir and Varsity Choir are open to students by audition. Johnsburg High School also has a Madrigal Ensemble that performs a Madrigal Dinner annually. The band program includes two percussion ensembles, jazz ensemble, concert band and marching band (The wind ensemble was eliminated in 2012 due to low enrollment). The marching band is mandatory for any student enrolled in any instrumental ensemble. The Johnsburg Marching Skyhawks march at every home football game, as well as competitions and parades throughout northern Illinois.

The Marching Band has competed at Marengo Settler's Day's Field Show Competition, St. Rita Mustang Stampede, Sandwich HS Marching Band Invitational, Wheaton North High School Marching Band Festival, and the University of Illinois Marching Band Festival. The Marching Band also performed in Walt Disney World at the Disney Magic Music Days Parade in March 2008. The concert band as well as combined choral group will perform in Nashville in 2014.

The Jazz Ensemble has competed at Jazz in the Meadows and the Northshore Jazz Festival. The Jazz Ensemble has also performed at the Fox Valley Jazz Festival and the Johnsburg Educational Partnership Foundation Gala, and recently at Walt Disney World in 2004, 2008, and March 2012. Historically, the school's band has also performed at Epcot Center (1988), and aboard a cruise ship in the Bahamas (1990, 2006 and 2010).

Theatre

Johnsburg High School has a theatre program that is extracurricular. Three teachers from the school run the program, though the program is mainly student-led, as many positions and duties revolving around a theatrical production are fulfilled by students. There are about 100 members, half of which are active in all aspects of any play, including acting, set construction, technical aspects, and many other roles. The program has been chosen twice to perform at the Illinois High School Theatre Fest.

Usually, plays are produced in the fall and spring, and a musical is performed in the winter. The shows usually run one or two weekends and make enough money to support the next play.

The school has a unique theater-in-the-round. Johnsburg High School Theatre has been described as "the pride and joy of the district,[10]" and is one of the best high school theatre programs in the area, as the group prides themselves in the level of talent, dedication, experience, and professionalism.

Athletics

Johnsburg is a member of the Fox Valley Conference, and also participates in state championship tournaments sponsored by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, the Skyhawks will return to the Big Northern Conference.

The school currently sponsors interscholastic sports teams for men and women in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, and track & field. Men may participate in baseball, football, and wrestling. Women many participate in softball and volleyball. In the fall of 2011 Johnsburg sent its first ever golfer to the IHSA state meet. Johnsburg received its first state trophy for a team sport in the spring of 2013 when the Lady Skyhawks soccer team took fourth place in class A soccer. There are also many alumni that play Division I sports. Both men and women compete in the school's bass fishing team, the only co-ed IHSA sport.[11] Beginning in the fall of 2014, Johnsburg will be moving back to the Big Northern Conference in all sports.
