David Gemmell (August 1, 1948July 28, 2006) was a Times bestseller fantasy writer and occasional historical fictionalist.

He was born in West London in the summer of 1948. At the age of sixteen he was expelled from school for organizing a gambling syndicate. He then became a day labourer and a nightclub bouncer in Soho. He also worked as a freelance writer for the London Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, and Daily Express.

He published his first novel, Legend, in 1984, and it has remained in print. In 1986 he became a full-time writer and most recently released Troy: The Lord of the Silver Bow in 2005 with the sequel Troy: Shield of Thunder due out in September 2006. He was considered by many to be Britain's premier fantasy writer. He died on Friday 28th July, 2006, two weeks after undergoing heart bypass surgery.[1]

He has now published 28 books under his own name, all of which have remained in print, as well as one under the name Ross Harding, which has not. His novels have also appeared in some collected editions and graphic novel form. They can be grouped into series, with some individual titles, as follows:
