Vince Staples (born July 2, 1993) is an American rapper from Long Beach, California. He is one-third of the Hip hop group Cutthroat Boyz, alongside fellow California rappers Joey Fatts, and Aston Matthews. Staples is currently signed to Blacksmith Records, A.G., ARTium Recordings and Def Jam Recordings. He came to prominence with his appearances on albums by Odd Future members and his collaborative mixtape titled Stolen Youth, with fellow American rapper Mac Miller, who produced the entire project. In October 2014, he released his debut EP Hell Can Wait, which included the singles "Hands Up" and "Blue Suede". His debut album, Summertime '06, is scheduled to be released on June 30, 2015.

He was also chosen as part of the XXL Magazine 2015 Freshman Class.[1]

Life and career

Vince Staples was born in Long Beach California, the youngest of his mothers children but has a younger brother through his father. Due to his father being constantly in and out of prison, and his mother always working, he spent a lot of time with his grandparents in Compton. Growing up, his family was heavily involved in gang activities starting with his grandfather who died when Vince was 12. He fell into the gang lifestyle shortly after when his friend Jabari Benson was murdered and stated that the EP, Hell Can Wait and the forthcoming album Summertime '06 are about his life during that time. At 15, he was fully committed to gang banging (he is a Naughty Nasty Gangster Crip or 2NGC as well as his cousin and fellow rapper Joey Fatts) and had gotten into some trouble then moved to Atlanta for eight months. When he returned to Long Beach, he dropped out of school and was frequently kicked out of the house.

Music career

Once he decided to get away from gang banging, to stay out of trouble he started hanging out with Dijon "LaVish" Samn and Chuck Wun who at that time were into making music. LaVish brought Vince on a trip to LA where he'd be recording with Syd Tha Kid from Odd Future and Vince ended up befriending her, Mike G and Earl Sweatshirt. Although he never wanted to be a rapper he featured on some of their songs, most notably Epar from Earls self-titled debut and after being urged by them and fans wanting more he decided to pursue a career in rap because he had no other plan for life. His debut mixtape Shyne Coldchain Vol. 1, was released December 30, 2011 via applebird.com.[2] In October 2012, Staples released a mixtape entitled Winter In Prague, produced entirely by Michael Uzowuru.[3]

Vince reconnected with Earl Sweatshirt when he returned from Samona in early 2012 and was invited by Earl to visit Mac Millers home studio. There Mac revealed he was aware of Vince's music and questioned why he doesn't put out more material, Vince told him that no one gave him beats and Mac who had recently starting producing offered to make him some. June 20, 2013, Staples released a mixtape titled Stolen Youth, which this mixtape was entirely produced by Mac Miller under his alias Larry Fisherman. The mixtape features guest appearances from Mac Miller, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, Da$H, Hardo, and Staples' Cutthroat Boyz co-member, Joey Fatts.[4] Following Stolen Youth's release, he toured as a supporting act on Mac Miller's The Space Migration Tour. After making three appearances on Earl Sweatshirt's debut studio album Doris, including the single "Hive", the liner notes revealed Staples had recently signed to the hip hop record label Def Jam Recordings.[3]

On March 13, 2014, he released his fourth mixtape titled Shyne Coldchain Vol. 2.[5] In October 2013, he told Complex, Earl Sweatshirt, Michael Uzowuru, Childish Major, No ID, and Evidence providing the productions on this mixtape.[6] On February 18, 2014, Staples revealed both the cover artwork and track listing for the mixtape. No ID, Evidence, DJ Babu, Childish Major and Scoop DeVille provided production, as well as featuring guest appearances by singer-songwriters Jhené Aiko and James Fauntleroy.[7] On March 2, 2014, Staples began touring the United States; along with Schoolboy Q and Isaiah Rashad on the Oxymoron World Tour, to support the release of Schoolboy Q's album Oxymoron.[8]

On August 15, 2014, Staples released a music video for "Blue Suede".[9] The track was also made available on iTunes.[10][11] On September 9, 2014, Vince released another new song titled "Hands Up" via iTunes. He released his latest project, Hell Can Wait on October 7, 2014.[12] During Staples' interview with XXL Magazine stating, Hell Can Wait will be include with guest appearances from Aston Matthews and Teyana Taylor, along with productions from No I.D., Infamous and Hagler.[13]

On May 4, 2015, Staples released "Señorita", as the first single from his debut album titled "Summertime '06."[14][15] Which is set to be released on June 30, 2015.[16] On June, 2 Vince released the track list for Summertime '06 via twitter and four days later revealed it would be a double disc album with 20 a total of 20 tracks.
