Thank you- you are correct. Did my best to be neutral. What our organization does is so important and like Wikipedia - it's not about the money. It is about doing the right thing. Our reservation system, PonoRez is named Pono for a reason. Pono in Hawaiian means everything right, good and just. So sorry I did want to save to be published. It was not clear how to save to drafts. I'll do this. Have a wonderful blessed day. ToniHawaiiFun (talk) 17:36, 25 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@ToniHawaiiFun: Hi! Thank you for your message. As it stands, your article still exists in article space and has not been tagged for deletion yet. I put some cleanup tags on it instead, hoping it might be salvageable. Do you know if your organization has received significant coverage in third-party, reliable sources? I'm concerned that it may not meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines. --NickContact/Contribs 17:40, 25 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Nedunjeliyan II

Hi you removed my Speedy tag on the aforementioned article. I would like to point out that Nedunjeliyan II is not mentioned in Maturaikkāñci or Early Pandya Kings. the editor who created this page has now added his name to the aforementioned two articles without providing any new sources. Therefore the article looks suspicious. And the source given does not mention him. Perhaps you can take a look see at what is going onFreeatlastChitchat (talk) 03:53, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@FreeatlastChitchat: Hi! I left you a reply here in response to your speedy deletion notification on the creator's talk page. There is a difference between not being notable and not making a credible assertion of notability. The former is a matter for a deletion discussion, the latter allows for speedy deletion. If an article makes a claim of notability, and the claim is at least somewhat credible (which I believe it is), then the article cannot be speedily deleted. Rather, a discussion must be created for consensus to delete. I hope this helps explain why I removed the speedy tag. If you end up creating an AfD for the article, I'll try to see if I can research the print source so I can weigh in on the discussion. Cheers, NickContact/Contribs 03:59, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cougar (slang)

Nick, I'm not sure where you got that this term is slang but not sexist, but this is misogyny at it's finest. I hope you don't update Nigger as just "slang" as well without putting in racist, as you are a man and not a female and most females find this word derogatory. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 135.23.177.247 (talk) 01:50, 29 April 2015‎

IssueTrak issue tracking software article submission declined

Hello NickW557, Thank you for reviewing my article; it is my first time as a contributor and your feedback is much appreciated. The subject of the article, IssueTrak, was one of the first types of software in the category that includes FreshDesk, ZenDesk, Jira, and a host of others that have article pages. I felt it was appropriate for IssueTrak to be presented to as a resource for anyone researching that type of software. I studied the articles of the other software solutions and WP's editorial guidelines. I followed the format of FreshDesk, ZenDesk, Jira, Samange and others very closely. I included links to outside sources such as PCReview.com and G2Crowd.com, a popular marketplace for reviews of software solutions of all kinds, and internal links to WP articles about usages of the software.

Would you be so kind as to provide me with a couple of specific examples of where I offered promotional content versus information pertinent to the software it would be most appreciated so that I may make the necessary edits. This software is a very good tool. I feel providing information about it would be useful to the WP audience.

Thank you, SoftwareNinja a.k.a. Steven

Screenwriting software

The link added for Fade In is the same, I would think, as those for Script It!, Scripts Pro, Writer Duet, Fountain, Script Wizard, etc. Should those all be removed, too? Screenwriter88 (talk) 21:05, 7 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Screenwriter88: Thanks for your message! Yes, I'd say they should be. Per WP:ELPOINTS, external links in the body of the article should be avoided except in certain situations. That article had way too many; linking to every product name and creating a directory of software is not one of those situations. I've gone ahead and converted all of them to either internal wikilinks or plain text (in the case of software called things like "Fountain", if we don't have an article on the software its not very helpful to link to Fountain). --NickContact/Contribs 21:14, 7 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. I've removed my warning from your user talk page. Now that I see that the link you added was in line with the rest of the page, its clear that while the page was out of policy, you were just following the format, so I don't think a warning was appropriate. Casey_anderson.jpg

Hello, I got a message from you regarding "fair use" for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Casey_anderson.jpg .

I think there has been some misunderstanding, I did NOT claim the file as "fair use". In fact I did not use the File Upload Wizard because the only option it gave me was "fair use" and this isn't fair use. It is, rather a permitted use under the license stated by the copyright holder on its website. Please see the below text which I included on the image description page (cut and pasted here):

"Permitted use: SPIE on its website ( http://spie.org/x113148.xml ) claims copyright of the original image from which the uploaded cropped, low-resolution image was obtained. SPIE on its website "Terms of Use" (accessed at http://spie.org/x35314.xml as of May 11, 2015) states, "SPIE images may be used for editorial purposes in public media only. They may not be used for advertising, business or personal communication." Wikipedia is free, non-commercial public media and the excerpt from the SPIE photo is being used for non-commercial editorial purposes only, to illustrate the subject being discussed in the accompanying article. Therefore, this image may be used under the permission granted by SPIE via their website, for the limited purpose of illustrating one article on Wikipedia."

The image is being used according to the use permitted by Copyright holder SPIE, i.e. according to their license terms stated in their website. This is different from "fair use".

I can if you like remove the parts about "minimal contribution" and "no commercial opportunities" if you think that muddies the waters, but I put that in because SPIE's license forbids commercial use. But if it is going to make people think I'm claiming fair use, I'll take it out.

As the file is being used pursuant to SPIE's free license terms, not fair use, could you please remove the deletion tag? TheBlinkster (talk) 17:12, 11 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@TheBlinkster: If you are not claiming fair use, then the image is subject to immediate speedy deletion (rather than with a two-day delay) under CSD F3 as being licensed for non-commercial use only. Images on Wikipedia have to meet one of the following two criteria: 1. they are licensed under a free license that allows reuse for any purpose including commercial purposes, or 2. they can be used under a claim of fair use satisfying the WP:NFCC. There is, unfortunately, no in-between. SPIE's "free license terms" are not free enough to be considered a "free license" for Wikipedia's standards, so the only alternative is fair use. --NickContact/Contribs 17:19, 11 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@NickW557: Thanks, got it. I'll see if I can re-do as a fair use rationale, if not I understand if it must go. TheBlinkster (talk) 17:22, 11 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@TheBlinkster: No problem , that's why I went ahead and assumed you meant to use a fair use tag and tagged it as replaceable (allowing a two-day delay) rather than non-commercial use. The problem with fair use with this image is that the subject depicted is alive. One of the criteria for fair use images to be used is that they are not "replaceable" with Wikipedia-standard freely-licensed photos (WP:NFCC#1). The test is not whether a freely-licensed photo actually exists right now, but whether one could be created. Being alive and active in one's field generally means that a freely-licensed photo could be taken of the person, which is why fair use photos of living people are almost always considered replaceable and aren't used.
There are exceptions to this, but they are few. For example, you uploaded File:David McGreavy in the 1970s.jpg and listed a really good argument for why it isn't replaceable in your fair use rationale, since the person is in prison and someone being able to take a photo of him is highly unlikely. I'm afraid unless you have a similar argument for this this photo, it probably can't be used under fair use either. --NickContact/Contribs 17:34, 11 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. I think at this point I'd rather this one just be deleted as I have other possible sources for a free "fair use" picture of this subject. It's not easy to come up with a rationale because he speaks at lots of events, etc. TheBlinkster (talk) 17:36, 11 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

File:8.5 Participant.Logo.COLOR.jpg

Hi Nick, This image is Participant Media's corporate logo. As such, Participant owns the copyright. I don't know how to update that information, but I am a representative of the company (VP, Communications). Not sure how much backup you need? (Jasonbuti (talk) 17:29, 12 May 2015 (UTC))[reply]

@Jasonbuti: Hi! In order for the image to be used on Wikipedia if your company owns the copyright, you would need to do one of the following two things:
  1. Agree to release the image under a free license or into the public domain which allows anyone to use the logo for any purpose including their own commercial interests. I'm assuming that's probably not what you want to do, so on to the next way...
  2. Use the image in a specific Wikipedia article under a claim of fair use. This keeps its copyright but allows it to be used for limited purposes on Wikipedia in a way that doesn't violate copyright law. In order to do this, your company will need an existing article on Wikipedia that isn't a draft (it needs to be a bonafide article). You will then need to comply with the non-free content criteria by listing a fair use rationale on the image page justifying its fair use. As it stands now, the image isn't used in any articles. Wikipedia does not allow copyrighted images to linger around unused.
While doing all of its, its important to keep Wikipedia's conflict of interest rules in mind when it comes to creating and/or editing an article about your company. --NickContact/Contribs 18:44, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Take a look at this page: File:Participant Media logo.jpg. If your goal is to replace that logo in the article with the logo you uploaded, you can use the fair use tag and the fair use rationale on that file's page as a guide for creating your file's fair use rationale. Once the image in the article is replaced with the new one, the old one will get tagged for deletion. --NickContact/Contribs 18:51, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple images

Hey Nick -- thanks for your message. My Professor whose page I am updating is very specific. The final image I uploaded Prof_LaP_FinalFinal.jpg is the one I intend to use. I will update the copyright info accordingly. Thank you again! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Youngvoltiare (talkcontribs) 04:40, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Youngvoltiare: Great, thanks . Once you've gotten the copyright and source info on the final image that you've decided to use, and if the other images won't be used, you may want to tag them for deletion with {{db-self}}. Wikipedia is happy to host free content that is useful, but it isn't an image hosting site per se, so we don't need several versions of virtually the same image unless the differences serve an encyclopedic value. --NickContact/Contribs 04:46, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

P&R Publishing

Nick,

I am new to Wikipedia in terms of adding articles.

A few minutes ago, I saw this message from you: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:JJH1947&oldid=prev&diff=662075430 -- Thank you for uploading File:Prp logo.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright and licensing status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can verify that it has an acceptable license status and a verifiable source. Please add this information by editing the image description page. You may refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

This file belongs to the company on whose behalf I have created the Wikipedia page P&R Publishing.

Where do I go on Wikipedia, and what fields do I need to fill in, so that this file is compliant with Wikipedia's policies. When I uploaded the file, I filled in all the fields.

I look forward to your help.

Thanks.

JJH1947 (talk) 05:59, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@JJH1947: Hi. Since the company owns the copyright to the logo, it can only be used on Wikipedia in one of two ways. Firstly, if the company agrees to release it into the public domain or under a free license that allows anyone to use it for any purpose, including their own commercial uses. If that isn't an option, it can be used under a claim of fair use but you need to comply with all of Wikipedia's non-free content criteria. The templates you will likely need to use are Template:Non-free logo and Template:Non-free use rationale logo. The template pages have documentation on how they are used. --NickContact/Contribs 15:19, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nick, Thanks for your help. I believe I have fixed the situation regarding the copyright for the logo file prp_logo.png. Please see what I have done here -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:JJH1947 -- and here -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Prp_logo.png -- and let me know if it is OK.
JJH1947 (talk) 18:52, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@JJH1947: The image page looks good. I've removed the deletion tag. Thank you for taking care of that! As for your user talk page, I'm not sure what I'm asked to look at. If you're referring to the COI disclaimer on your user page, it looks okay, but I would make it more clear by adding in what capacity you're "responsible for editing" the article, like as an employee of the organization. --NickContact/Contribs 18:59, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nick, Thank you for removing the image tag. I am working on the other issues that have been noted about the page, e.g., notability, the need for secondary references, and verification. Please let me know if the information here -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:JJH1947 -- is adequate. JJH1947 (talk) 19:10, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nick, If you have a minute, would you please look at the article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%26R_Publishing). I added references 8-16 a few minutes ago; I will add more tomorrow. Are these the types of references that make implicit or explicit claims more verifiable?. Thanks for your help, John JJH1947 (talk) 00:55, 14 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the advice. Please move the article to draft space until more reliable sources are sourced. Claytoncarmichael (talk) 13:54, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bill Osborn photos

Nick,

Thanks for reviewing the "Bill Osborn" article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Osborn) and the new image I uploaded. I'm confused regarding the "derivative work" copyright issue. The image is of Bill Osborn, the subject of the article, in the uniform of a team for which he played. The photo was taken by a family friend and given to Bill Osborn. It's unclear to me where the copyright issue lies.

If it's useful, this is the beginning of the message posted on my talk page:

"This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work."

Is there a particular annotation I need to make for this image to be acceptable? I very much appreciate your assistance and insight.

The Pantry — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thepantry (talkcontribs) 16:07, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Thepantry: Hi, thanks for your message. The issue with those photographs is that they are photographs of photographs, meaning that we have two different copyrights that have to be accounted for. The data attached to the photo indicates that the images were taken on an iPhone. If you took the iPhone picture, you own the copyright to that image, but whoever took the actual black-and-white printed photograph in the photograph owns the copyright to that. It is that underlying copyright that has not been accounted for, which is why the images are tagged. You need to indicate who took those photographs, and show that they have agreed to release them under the license you've released the iPhone photograph under. I know it is a little confusing. Basically, if you took a photo of a movie poster with your phone, just because you own the photo taken with the phone doesn't mean that you own the movie poster in the photo. Its the same thing here.
The family friend of Bill Osborn that owns the copyright to the original photos can follow the instructions here to release their rights to those images. --NickContact/Contribs 16:19, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Nick. Extremely helpful. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thepantry (talkcontribs) 22:50, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey' I added an image to the Chris Philp page when I created the MP info box. You then put it down for speedy deletion. The photo I got was from parliament.uk and it says you can use any of the images on the site for non-commercial purposes which I feel covers Wikipedia (http://www.parliament.uk/site-information/copyright/use-of-parliamentary-photographic-images). Can I re-upload the image?? Trimfrim20 (talk) 21:30, 13 May 2015 (UTC)trimfrim20[reply]

@Trimfrim20: Hi. Unfortunately, "non-commercial use only", "Wikipedia-use only", "educational use only", and similar licenses are not compatible with Wikipedia policy. Images on Wikipedia are required to be either freely licensed for anyone to use for any reason, including their own commercial use, or they have to qualify for fair use, which images of living people almost always don't. --NickContact/Contribs 21:53, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

image undelete request

Hello Nick,

I edited the "Rhomboid protease" entry on May 19th adding a new image (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:S-E_complex.png&action=edit&redlink=1). This was later deleted by you because of copyright concerns. Unfortunately I couldn't attend to this earlier to dispel the copyright concerns. I have made this image myself and it is based on a figure in my paper that is open access and I own the copyright to it. So there is no copyright problem. Could you please restore the image on the page.

Thanks a lot.

KvidoS (talk) 15:38, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@KvidoS: Hi, sorry for not replying to you sooner, I was out of town. I tagged the image as not having information on its copyright status, although I did not actually delete it. It was deleted by an administrator after 7 days went by and the copyright status was not provided. If you created the image yourself, you can re-upload it, but you will need to release your copyright claims to the image under a free license that allows anyone to use the image for any purpose, including their own commercial interests. You can see a list of acceptable free licenses here. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 19:27, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Durjoy Datta pic.jpg

"Edited Not replaceable with free media because" in the file description page with "n.a.", will it prevent the file from being deleted?. Thanks. Hcns (talk) 19:19, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Hcns: Hi, thanks for your message. No, I'm afraid it wont. The issue with the image is that it is a photograph of a living person being used under a claim of fair use. According to Wikipedia's non-free content guidelines, non-free images of living people are considered replaceable because it is possible that someone could take a photograph of the person themselves, and then release that photo under a free license. The only exception to this is when the person is not ever seen in public, such as a prisoner. Obviously that wouldn't apply to a celebrity. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 19:23, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Please help me and you can edit anything on the file discussion page so that the file page doesn't get deleted. Removing the template on the file discussion page will work? Thanks. Hcns (talk) 19:38, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Hcns: I'm afraid I don't think the problem is fixable by editing any pages. The issue is that the image itself, regardless of what the discussion page might say, does not comply with Wikipedia policy. If you disagree with me about that, you can edit the file description page and place the following on the page with your reason for why you think the image does not violate policy: {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|Your reason that a free replacement can not be found or created}}. An administrator will review my reasoning, as well as your reasoning, before making a decision about deleting the file. Do not, however, remove the deletion template on the page until the issue is decided by an administrator. Thanks, Nick—Contact/Contribs 19:44, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
