Set in 1996, in the village of Azadganj, Udaan tells the story of the bonded labourers of a wealthy landlord, Kamal Narayan Rajvanshi (Bhaiyaji). The story revolves around the female protagonist, named Chakor (Spandan Chaturvedi), who is kept (girvhi) as collateral. When Chakor's mother Kasturi (Sai Deodhar) was pregnant, her father Hariya dies in an accident. Bhuwan had neither money nor property to donate a cow to Pandit for Hariya's funeral. Hence Bhuwan and Kasturi go to the Haveli to beg for money from Bhaiyaji. Instead, Tejaswini, Kamal Narayan Rajvanshi's wife, suggests they keep their unborn child as collateral. The couple offer their child as a bond laborer of Bhaiyaji. Later, they complete the funeral of Hariya. Meanwhile, Kasturi gives birth to a daughter, Chakor, on the night of a full moon. Tejaswini allows them to take Chakor back home for 7 years, and after that she must be brought to Haveli to work. After 7 years (2003), Chakor accidentally meets Haveli. As she toils and works, she constantly dreams of freedom. She is a fearless, kind-hearted, and intelligent girl, supported by Ishwar Rawat, Sandeep Baswana. Ishwar is the father of Aditya Rawat, who happens to be a freely spirited collector from Lucknow. He loves Chakor as his daughter and wants her to study. His whole family is against Bhaiyaji and wants to expose his cruelty to the public. Ishwar fights every situation to get Chakor an education. He even takes her to Lucknow to get his family to support Chakor. Ishwar's father Purshottam is frightened of Bhaiyaji; as a result, he tries his best to return Chakor back to Haveli. However, one day Ishwar is arrested in the fake case by Bhaiyaji. He argues that Ishwar kept Chakor in his home illegally in order to sell her. To protect Ishwar, Chakor has to choose between her education or saving the man who helped her. Chakor decides to take a vow that she will never again have access to education.
